Default how long did it take you to get into rented?

Not long to go now - 10 days!!!
Would anyone like to share their experiences of renting a house in Brisbane suburbs after arrival. We have never rented before and have 7 days furnished house in Kangaroo Point arranged and are hoping to be able to move into a rented house within 7 days. Is this going to be do-able or does it take longer to get a house sorted?
Also, are the rentals normally on 6 month leases or are they longer? We will be looking to buy a property as soon as possible and don't want a long term lease.

Finallly, I know the house market in Brissy has gone up a hell of a lot in the last couple of years - any opinions on if it may continue to increase at such a pace? I'm pretty sure that uk prices have pretty much peaked at the moment and probably will not increase much at all over the next couple of years.

What do all reckon??

Are you saying you've got 7 days to find and rent a house?

if the house u want to rent is ready to move into, then u might be ok with 7 days.
we are in sydney. ive been told , the longer u take out the lease the more chance u can get it reduced weekly.

We can always extend the Kangaroo Point apartment but will be looking at rentals on the web a couple of days before we go so can then view them as soon as we arrive. Really just wondering what the typical time scale is from agreeing to rent a property and actually moving in.

get the estate agents to have rentals ready for u to view. dont go by what u see on the net. the pics we saw of some houses were taken about a year ago, when they last rented them.
they was like a bomb site when we opened the door.

Personally, I think you are pushing it a bit with a week.

You may well be lucky, but they generally put 'em up for rent well before they are ready.

That said, you could find a place that's been up for a while and
not been rented, so is available pretty quick.

I would advise you not to rush into getting a place. Better to find somewhere nice, where you'll be happy. You will be there at least six months, its worth making the right choice to start with rather than count the days 'till the lease is up. Good luck.

We found it abit of a struggle here in Melbourne. We had no history of renting so people were hesitant. Even offering 12 months in advance didnt do much good. vebtually we met a guardian angel who took us under her wings and got it sorted for us. Some of the rentals we looked at I wouldn't allow my worst enemy to live in. you have to have a good look round to get something clean and in good condition.

Just my experience of things.....

Is it possible? YES. The sooner the property is tenanted the sooner they get $$$$$$$$$$$. Does depend on whats available that week though.

The Real Estate agent will though want to know that you will be able to pay the rent, look after the property, so go armed. Maybe photos of your house in the UK, work you have already lined up? paying a bit in advance? Just suggestions.

hi,

we are hoping to be doing a similar type of thing in NOVEMBER and are hoping to move into rented accomodation in Brisbane, how did you guys find a place for 7 days? Are you all going out together or is one of you going first.

At the moment we have just been granted visas and just decided on Brisbane however we really do not know how to go about finding jobs and home - have you got any advice - I am reckoning on about three - four weeks to find a house to rent and to get in to it - but that is just my own thoughts

Cheers, Diddy

Default renting and buying

we arrived on august 19th last year and where in rented accomodation for 27th of the month. we put up our bond money and then signed a 6 month lease. you can keep renting on a monthly basis after that. we bought property just before our 6months was up so it worked out great for us. we found the house prices ok but seeminly the year before u could buy the house we are in now for $60 grand less!!! but these things happen. i think the market has hit a plato at the moment. we are not complaining cause were pretty happy. there is loads of great places to settle it is really hard to decide but renting in one place does not mean that u have to settle there.

good luck with the move.

see u down under the greatest place on earth

ps just to make u sick , we were at the beach yesterday in the middle of winter and the kids went in swimming.

what a life!!!!

Bamboy,

Middle of Summer in the UK - rain, cold. Went down to Felixstowe and the only thing in the water was out of the local sewage pipes.

Really can't wait to be out there now.

You may be able to advise. When looking at the rental ad's, are the amounts quoted purely for rent or do they include rates or anything else?

Thanks,

Paul.

paul,

we paid $240 a week for a brand new 4bedroom ensuite, paid 4weeks upfront. everything is included in the price rates and that. only have to pay your bills.

david was the only one that was working at the time until the wee one went to school and we got $40 a week from the government towards the rent. we where classed as one income. never told them about any money we brought from home!!!

you will get something no problem, but remember that the rentals here are not furnished, we had nothing as our stuff hadnt arrived yet, so it was down the first furniture store to buy the basics.

hope this helps

Thanks for the positive info Catrina - What suburb in Brissy are you? We're heading for Albany Creek / Eatons Hill. $240 a week sounds excellent price for what you got.

Thanks to everyone on here for being so helpful and keen to share your experiences!!
