How long before you lose your accent?

I'm from the North East of England and was once asked by a Welshman which part of Wales I was from - at the time I'd never even been to Wales. I think I subconsciously pick up/mimic accents so there may be no hope for me.
Em said her daughter has started pronouncing "water" differently, and I keep catching myself doing the same thing; I've replaced the "t" with a "d"

I think probably some change of vocabulary is inevitable - ie lollies instead of sweets (my four year old needs to understand her prep mates when she starts school tomorrow) etc etc. But the accent. Don't think I will ever lose that. I'd feel affected like I was taking the mick or so. So there I am well and truly stuck with my English accent.
My little girl is a completely different kettle of fish - she already says "way dup" instead of "wait for me" - eeuuch!

(skirt, bird, hurt all those vowels words) ...oh and ' Cin I put moy nidie on did' (can I put my nightie on dad) think the 'i' in 'a' is from previous kiwi mates.... took me a long time to figure out what 'him' was in a sandwich....
