How fashionable are Australians?

I'd appreciate how you personally define fashion regarding preferred clothes, shoes, hats, accessories.

Q:Are Aussies keen on the designer's brands or the more comfortable generic brands?

This is part of a feasibility study on a business venture so I hope you can give me your better answers.

Many thanks.

Cheers,
Hannah

I found some of the clothes very colourful, :D but who wants to wear black in their temperatures!

I think that they do cater well for the fuller figure. On the whole the clothes are not bad.

One thing which I found refreshing was that people wern't bothered by fashion labels as much. You can slip on a pair of shorts and a teashirt, a pair of sandles and you are away :D

The fashion is great :)

And if you come to a nice hot place like this you don't need much material. You can charge for the missing bits

Not that I notice these things of course :D

The fashion here is a season behind the UK.
The 50's style flowery skirts that were everywhere last suumer in the UK, were in the shops here in November (start of summer)
Now we are heading into winter the shops are full of crochet ponchoes and fur lined body warmers.

There is great variation to suit all sorts of people and all sorts of lifestyle in Aus. In cities especially, you will find the ultra-cool, stylish people who go out just to be seen. (e.g Chapel St in Melbourne). What do you mean by a) designers and b) generic brands? If you mean European designers such as Prada, Versace, D&G, etc, then these are popular and readily available in the big cities (both full label and diffusion ranges). Less expensive - things like Diesel, replay also very popular. Generic brands - do you mean 'high street' - things like Cue, Satch, Mango, Sports Girl, FC?

European labels tend to be expensive - in part due to the high import duty on imported clothing. But 'European' is often seen as desirable so there is often a higher price tag for that reason too.

My family live rural and spend most of their time in shorts and singlets. Their social life is generally sitting on someone's porch or BBQ by the river, and working on a farm so smart or trendy clothes aren't practical.

I know a lot of people comment on the fact that there is less emphasis on clothes 'snobbery' in Oz but it does indeed exist loud and proud in certain places (i.e there is a market for it if you're looking for a market) Guess it all depends on your lifestyle. :)

Hubby went out with the boys last week to a Finnegans bar,he said it looked like he was walking into a farmers ball  !! :D
Very few seem to bother about fashion, labels etc..

We have just got ourselves a babysitter & i am totally confused as what to wear when we go out :o !!

As long as it looks good and feels nice, who cares about the name / label !

This is what I love about being back in OZ - nobody cares about the label I'm wearing. UK is so superficial in this respect.

Mairi

PS. There are only so many things you can do with shorts, t-shirt and thongs :D

It's funny tho cos in the last year back in the UK, nobody has ever asked me what labels I'm wearing. They might say "I like your top, where did you get it" but I don't feel any pressure to buy expensive branded clothing. Maybe it depends on lifestyle? Did people really look down on you if you're not wearing designer stuff? I do know people here who are clothes-obsessed but I don't socialise with them.

Some guy got murdered in Brisbane a few weeks back and robbed of his designer clothing (which turned out was fake anyway).

That is so true, I live in country WA and when we went to Perth the other day it was really weird to see people all dressed up again, a warm day and all the office people wearing suits. A person in a suit in Gero is a rare site, even at formal functions like weddings.

I spend my life in a teeshirts and shorts, When we leave here I'm gonna look like country hicksville gal.

Sadly Yes ! some of my ex work collegues (Scotland not Germany) thought the label was more important than the person :(

Same in rural Qld. When MrsDagBoy's nephews came down to Bris for a family funeral I had to lend them shoes - they had remembered their suits - just hadn't remembered they needed shoes. One of them is a pineapple farmer and doesn't even wear shoes out in the fields most of the time. If he did I am sure he would want something with a good label though, otherwise the other farmers might think less of him.

I don't think Aussies care so much for labels here - or maybe it is that fewer of them care. That may be because they have more sense or it might just be that the lifestyle makes it irrelevant (at least up here). When I worked in the UK it was expected that I would wear a suit. I had several suits, all "labels", wore designer ties, nice shirts etc. In the last 4 years I have worn a suit about 10 times at work and most of them were in the first year.

I remember at my sister's wedding (in country Vic) people turned up to the church in jeans!! It was bizarre - there was the bride in a long flowing white gown, us bridesmaids in long blue silky dresses and strappy shoes, groom and groomsmen all in smart dark suits and dark glasses, and a load of guests in jeans and trainers.

Bet you'll be line dancing by the time you leave there :p

Re: How fashionable are Australians?

That's a very good question. Ozzie men wear, as far as I can see, in increasing order of formality:
- surf bum look (for the beach)
- shorts + tee-shirt (at home)
- jeans + shirt
- suit + tie (for the office)
- white tie & tails (for weddings)

There really seems a gap for what we Poms call "smart casual", e.g. linen suit, the Ozzie bloke just doesn't get this. Possibly they think this is the sort of thing "poofters" wear. Shame, as I think it's a cool look. Once in Oz, wearing some smart clothes of this type I (a bloke) was ironically wolf-whistled at by a workman! Perhaps it will come, in the same way that standards of cooking have risen over recent years.

Usually the case unless it said on the invitation for formal wear. Even at funerals, people now wear casual clothes.

Most of the "old-type" of farmers that I know still go bare-foot on their properties and if they come to town for seed and fertilizer during the day they drive in barefoot. Less stuff to get caught in the boot and socks to irritate me thinks.

Where we live there are families who want a semi-rural liefeyle or hobby farmers. Noone wears smart clothes unless they are going to the steak restaurant or the restaurant at the pub then their clothes are clean and presentable.

Our neighbours all wear workman/country clothes/jeans some of us are in the CFA. At a meeting of the CFA the other month everyone was wearing paddock boots.

I like all the RM williams trousers, jeans or moleskins(esp in winter), straight leg, good fit, warm, tough and no metrosexual rubbish styling. I also wear good old 501s.

You can buy secondhand RM stuff in Op shops which are great for doing everything around the home (mowing, DiY) which is what you spend most of the time doing. I've hardly bought any new clothes in 18 months here.

Either or.

Mostly blundies. They could be any boot that is a ankle slip-on with a rubber sole, a derivative of a work boot or a riding boot. Maybe a metal toe cap. When I was jackerooing I wore "riding" ankle boots, ie I bought them from a equestrian mob, now I wear Blundies, I have a pair of RMs for everything else.
And a few parting gestures to fashion walking boots now and again.

Agree with everyone who says it depends where you are. In Sydney there are areas (Paddington, Woollahra, Double Bay Etc) where they are perfectly accessorised and wearing head to toe labels even to pop out for milk. In the country it's all RM Williams, driza-bones and flannos. You'll also find pretty much everything in between. There are plenty of Australian fashion mags and some of the Aussie designers are getting pretty big globally. Horses for courses I suppose. :)

I work in an office and my "stlye" would be - Business Casual - I think.
Slacks, nice top, occasional suit or dress.

At home it's different though! Capri's, singlet and thongs for the warm months and jeans and a jumper for cooler weather.

I like the style here as it seems to cater to no one and everyone. Meaning I can buy that daggy, old fashioned item that is totally my personality and no one cares. But in the next shop I can get something very upscale and flash for those special nights out.

Wear what you like!

Re: How fashionable are Australians?

Agree with the previous brisbane poster, out here in the suburbs no-one seems to give a fig for appearance and comfort rules. In the City/Valley, particularly out at night, there is a sense that people have made an effort with their appearance and clothes are trendier.

The main difference I've noticed when shopping is the apparent absence of middle priced shops. There are plenty of cheap shops churning out last season in europes stuff (not a criticism before i get jumped on, summer here comes later after all) which I would compare to New Look/ Top Shop/ Dorothy Perkins and shops selling expensive designer names, but no equivalent of Karen Millen or even Oasis type shops. The middle priced places tend to be very frumpy and I think aimed at an older market. A Mango or Zara would be very welcome here!

Michaela
