How far behind?
I have been looking at loads of properties all over OZ on realestate.com
would i be right in saying that they seem to be a long way behind with interior decor with the exception of a few at the higher end price of the market? One thing i can honestly say is that because of the size of properties they are mostly open plan which i really cant fault as back here in the UK you can only have open plan at the higher end house prices due to lack of space m2 that you get for your money. Is this just another difference in lifestyles from the UK and OZ? they work to live and material items dont mean S*** I know i may get slayed for this post but, hey! the missus cant see us living in 99% of these houses which are within our budget and spend a fortune to have them completely overhauled inside to an aceptable standard (to the wife!) Any comments or abuse will be appreciated! i will let her read allllllllllllllll your reply`s  |

Open plan - God how I love open plan! The main advantage is air flow. For the same reason we live in boxed houses i.e. lots of rooms with nothing connected here in the UK is to to keep warm. In Oz the houses are open plan to encourage air flow and its conducive to the lifestyle i.e. big living / kitchen areas which open onto a patio / verandah etc. Most houses are set out like this unless you buy something inner city which is older i.e. before folk realised that terraces are good in the UK where space is at a premium but hey, look at all this space - why don't we add a few feet between houses! I have lived here for years now and never understood the British penchant for painting every room a different colour. Well, that's an overstatement for I do actually understand - it gives each room a character and a purpose. I think. The Brits are more into their houses because we spend more time in them. I keep saying 'we' but I'm an Aussie. And its true about not living to work - you will spend far more time out doors than ever before. Friends of ours who moved over to Melbourne in November last year tell me they are never home these days. They just moved into a house they had built and its a: huge b: cheaper that the house they had here but twice as big and c: completely open plan. They love it. They also say they have never had so much spare spending money. But that's for another thread! I'm not sure I've answered any of your questions. What I can say is that things are very different in Australia, many things are done differently and with a different focus. If you are looking for a version of Britain stay here. If you want a house like the one you have here you won't find it. You need to be open minded and open to change. Dinnie |

There's a rumour going around that we wont have to chop wood to have a wash. There are these new fangled heaters that use gas or electricity (what ever that is) that heat so much water you can have a shower. Note to self: build shower. I suppose one day we wont have to cook in the pit outside and will be able to cook out of the rain. The local tom-tom is saying quarry tiles with grannysmith green bechtops and knottypine fronts will be the look in the future  :D WW |

Everywhere's different. Isn't that why we all move around in the first place? |

Guys, the very 1st thing that most people do when they buy a house is redecorate,,,budget in another couple of grand and get it looking just how YOU like it!!! Smell the coffee yet? It never ceases to amaze me the amount of people that buy a house based on the colour of the friggin walls!! Secondly, and this is way off topic and may even offend some (oh, well there's a first!!)....why do most Scottish people on here, either insist on making reference to Scotland in their user name or insist on talking in some gaelic form of English when they type??? Do you see many English with names like George the Dragon or the round table knight from London...? Do we insist on talking in our local dialect (believe me, if I did, you wouldnt understand Jock)!! I just dont get it?? OK, we're all proud of our heritage......but get over it for gawds sake! |

Re: How far behind?
To return to the OP's question, I don't think Oz is *behind* on interior decor (whatever that means, exactly) but I personally can't understand the insanity of putting cream carpets in rental properties. It's begging for trouble. Damned things show every tiny stain...couldn't stand them in the UK either, I hasten to add. Cream carpets....kids....dogs....cats......bad news. Came home the other day to find dog had suffered a bout of diarrhoea - in the living room....
Which leads me on to my best purchase since we came to Oz - a new Vax machine! :D Sue |

We Scots have to bloody put up dim people referring to The UK as England all the time, so why not?? Would calling The UK "Scotland" sound strange to English people?? You bet your ****ing arse it would! We have to listen to ignorant dim tossers saying that every day, and the twat who started this anti Scottish rant would do well to remember that!! |
