Default How do I tell my boss?

I need to tell my boss about my plans for Aus, but I am dreading it. I've only been in my job a short time and he will not want to hear about my lack of comittment to it and may question why I took the job in the first place if I wasn't planning on staying. How did you guys out there tell your bosses and what kind of reactions did you get.

I feel sick at the thought of it.

Do you need to tell them yet?

When I needed the references, I went to have a confidential chat with HR and they did my reference for me and nothing has leaked out until I told my boss last Thursday that I leave at Christmas!!! :scared:

I knew my boss would have been a real pain so avoided it until the last possible moment!!

i not only had to tell my boss, i had to tell my dad at the same time as my dad is my boss. having sad that he took it very well and is supporting me. i approached it by firstly saying that we were considering going and gradually built up to the final "yes we are applying" bit
you must also remind him/her that this is a long process of normally about 12 months looking at other peoples time lines.
still i wish you all the best and good luck. Keith.

How were you able to be confident enough that your HR person wouldn't tell your boss? We're soon going to be going throught the ACS process and obviously don't want my husband's boss to know right away that he's considering leaving. The big problem we have is that his top line manager is not only head of his Dept (IT) but also HR and they are fairly good friends (professionally speaking).

cheers

when we had to get reference for ACS, the large company my other half works for has a big HR section. With other stuff you can approach in confidence, and this was the same, but also pointed this out just to make sure. Did have some difficulty as they only usually do references when you leave, had it agreed with one person, then she left and had a bit of hassle persuading the next person.

Is there anyone else in HR your hubby can approach that has the authority to provide references?

Mr Ee has just been through all of this and he spoke to HR confidentially ages ago. They advised him on how to word letters, what he could ask for from his line manager in terms of flexible resignation etc. At his firm he can arrange to resign with the option to withdraw this is the house sale falls through and also to work longer than his notice period if necessary.

It was a very good way to do it as it means he went into the actual discussion with his line manager aware of what he could ask for in terms of company policy etc.

Our biggest thing now is how much longer will the house sale process take so as to arrange when he and work will part company!

other half took on new role knowing visa was a matter of formality, but he has yet to hand in notice.

His reaction, if asked, will be that we had applied there was no guarantees the visa would be granted and application was made whilst we qualified for it, thus was not even sure we would actually go if it was granted.

This is partially/mostly the truth, and feel happier that he would be more beliveable extending the truth. You could say the application process happen quicker than expected - it was not that long ago when the norm was the year mark, and before that could take some up to 2yrs.

I would not feel too guilty about it either, you could leave for a number of other reasons, that's why companies will have notice periods

I suppose I just had to rely on HR to do the "right" thing and they did. They did not tell the director who we work for so I suppose you have to rely on the integreity of HR.

I have been working at the same place for 11 years, and my boss is like a second dad to me so i was dreading telling him, i ended up in tears when i told him.
He was absolutely brilliant about it, he said that he'd been expecting it for ages as he knew that i havent been happy with living in the u.k for some time, he's helped us out with any references that i needed e.t.c
So don't worry about telling your boss, if he isnt very supportive of your decision then you know that what you are doing is the right thing, you'll find a new job and probably be much happier in australia, just reassure him that you will be 100% commited up until the day you leave,
good luck and let me know how you get on,
molesey.

My G grade is thinking about returning to NZ anyway so she isn't a problem... our sr manager has looked into it herself (in detail) and wants to come with me...

Oh my boss was fabulous..he is such a darling...to be honest I'll miss him more than family! He was over the moon and is even taking me out to celebrate next month!

Mmmmm maybe he's trying to get rid of me!!

He's writing me excellent references and keeps saying...'what will I do without you'

this is what’s happening to me

I have a small electrical contracting business that myself and a friend started three years ago, whilst my friend has always know that I would like to live in oz I don’t think he ever thought that I would do anything about it,
Holidaying in Oz over Christmas clinched the deal for us as a family so when I got home I started collating info on my work and making the application for TRA approval.
I sat my business partner down and had a chat about what I wanted to do,
Well to say that he wasn’t happy was an understatement
Basically he blew a fuse ( pardon the pun )
Upshot is that since then ( feb 05 ) The friendship has to all extents and purposes finished
We use to go out socialising two or three times a week to the local pub and
since then we haven’t been out once and there’s a heavy atmosphere that you could cut with a knife, we are still in business and its doing well but for how much longer I don’t know,

hope you guys faired better

regards

steve
