Default How do house prices compare with wages

Was just wandering if anyone could give me any info on how house prices compare with wages in Oz? We are hoping to settle in the state of Victoria as we are applying for a sponsored skills visa.
My husband is a joiner/builder. Does anyone know the type of wage we should be expecting to get? And how much we should bugdet for for a 4-5 bedroom house? (Got lots of kids)

Where in Vic are you heading? City, rural Vic? House prices vary greatly within the different suburbs as well as between city/country.

It's really like saying you're moving to England, how much does a house cost - e.g. prices in London differ greatly to say, prices in Lancaster. Similarly, prices in Melbourne are wildly different to prices in say, Mildura (500kms inland from Melbourne). (a 4-bed house in Mildura could cost about $250k; an equivalent 4 bed in a nice inner suburb of Melbourne will be at least double that, even treble (depending exactly which suburb).)

House price:wage ratio will obviously also depend on location (for both wage and house price)

Good luck

Maria,

This is one of the best sites for checking house prices:
http://www.realestate.com.au/cgi-bin...ch?a=bhp&t=res

and this one may give you a wages indication:
https://www.payscale.com/login.asp?m...eport%2Easp%3F

However if you can answer hiddenpaws questions you may get better first hand info.

Maria,

GoMatilda's home page has an excellent Cost of Living Calculator. You can find it at:

http://www.gomatilda.com/home.cfm

This site also helps with some 'real life' figures:

http://www.aussiemove.com/aus/costlive.asp

I've done a fair bit of COL research for Melbourne now, & found that as a rough guide, it's about 40% more expensive to live in than Brissie. However, salaries seem to be proportionately higher too.

One thing that has amazed me is how much house prices have gone up in Melbourne in the last 12 months, since I started browsing the property sites.

Good luck with the state sponsorship

Anya.

And I thought you were only checking the price of shoes in Melbourne compared to other cities.

Hi and thanks for the info. Do you know much about the areas round Melbourne? We'll be looking for somewhere quiet near schools where house prices aren't crazy. I dont know whether it's true but I've heard there are no 'bad' areas in Oz like there is here in the uk...
Cheers

Maria,

Don't know about where to live in Melb with kiddies (not moved over there yet - not till Aug-ish), but I'm sure there are plenty on this forum who can suggest suitable suburbs etc.... maybe you could post a thread asking for recommendations about family-friendly suburbs?

Mind you, where people choose to live is such a personal thing that, until you've been there & sussed out all the places, it's difficult to know. All you can get from posting here is maybe a shortlist of good places to start looking.

As for 'Bad Areas' - IME all places in the world have them, no matter how idyllic - it's part of the human condition for people to behave badly, so there ya go... (My personal prize for the most polite beggars/muggers/hoons has to go to those in San Francisco, while the most scary/rude ones are here in Cambridge UK )

Good luck!

Anya.

this sort of question has cropped up loads of times.
If you do a search you will find the answers to lots of things you may need to know.
You will also find lots about the social problems, drugs, crime etc. which are also rife in parts of Australia.
BTW have you found that it will be possible to get PR considering your ages? Just curious.
Good luck

G

Good joke

If you mean shootings, drugs, prostitution, do not worry - just like the UK, Oz cities have them all.

Hi there. I'm 31 and hubby is 38. You're probably thinking of Sue, a friend of mine who posted a thread about the best visa to apply for due to their ages etc. Sorry for any confusion
