How difficult was it to get a rental?
 

Just wondering how difficult everyone found it to get a rental when you first got to Australia. Given that we'd like to move into rental as soon as possible, before we get our jobs, I anticipate this might present some difficulty. Plan to live in Melbourne. Another poster said they had to offer 6 months' rent in advance before they could get one. Would be interested to hear other people's experiences.

I can't comment on Melbourne as i live in Perth. We have not found it easy to find a rental here. we offed 6 months rent in advance, but someone offed more weekly rent then was advertised so we lost it, its crazy i tell ya, :p but it hasn't got me down there is so much to smile about and things have a strange way of working out so i just smile an get on with it :beer:

We had the same experience as 'Mysterio', people are offering more money per week to get the properties. This is our Perth suggestions, may be the same for Melbourne......
You have to move VERY fast! Have all your i.d. photocopied, passports, visa's, birth, marriage certificate and references ready. As soon as you see the house get the application in. Be proactive and get the application forms for all the major rental companies, just in case you see a property on Saturday afternoon, when the real estate agent are shut. This is what we did as we viewed the house on Sunday afternoon. We then filled out the application ready for Monday morning.
You have to put 1 weeks rent 'CASH' into the envelope as a good will gesture that you really want the property. If you don't get it, you get the money back.... if you change your mind and waste their time.... you loose it.
The property came onto the market late Friday afternoon, we viewed on Sunday, we got a phone call Monday to say we were successful and were offered the property, but there were now 5 other couple wanting to view the property if we didn't want it!

we live in Hobart so not relevant to Mellie.
we found that if renting through an agent some agents want to do a credit check on you; as only just arrived in Aus (unless you've lived here before?) you have no credit rating so they won't rent to you.
so we rented from a private landlord, no problem, no huge amount of forward rent-maybe he just liked the look of us, plus we had jobs to go to :o

HI WERE ON SUNNY COAST QLD , THE HOUSE ACROSS RD FROM US WENT UP FOR RENT THIS WEEK & YESTERDAY THERE WERE 6 FAMILIES OUTSIDE WAITING TO VIEW IT . GOING FOR $450 A WEEK .
THE NEARER XMAS IT GETS THE MORE DIFFICULT .

Hi

We have just moved into rental. The only problem we had was the fact that we had two dogs coming over. If you have no dogs you should have no problems, I would not worry too much about it. We had the choice of two rentals in the end and found the process easy. I would reccomend that you stay in a motel or something for the first week or so as we changed our minds on areas a couple of times.

You just fill in the application form, provide identification, (Driving Licence, Passport, Utility bills from UK, Credit Card details, 3 references) We offered to pay 6 months in advance as we wanted to be clear for 6 months.

There are quite a few properties available it is just which area do you choose. The agents we dealt with (two) were very helpful and helped us get the property we wanted.

It is a little difficult for us as I had to put my sister on the lease as security. They wouldn't give me a rental otherwise. I am in Perth

Moving to Sydney soon and will be staying with a mate till iget a job. Should have one within a week. Then once workin and knowing how much i will take home after tax then i will know what i can spend on rent. No more than $300 i reckon for rent. But i dont have references for other places i have stayed at. I live in Thailand, so if i got a reference here it would be in Thai as the women who is the manager of the condos doesnt speak a word of English. So what should i do? Will having a job be enough? What if i had a letter from my mate saying he would back us etc etc? Any ideas? :beer:

I think that looking at $300 a week in rent in Sydney is a bit low. Sydney costs quite a bit to rent. I only know this as I have a mate from BE who lives there and she pays quite a bit.

What references do you provide when you have just arrived from UK and have never rented anywhere before?

Another problem, we arrive on sunshine coast 3rd November and I can't even get agents to reply to emails about 2 week holiday rentals!

Depends on the location and what you want.ie How many bedrooms etc 300 is alot if there is only one person working. Though the wife will get work but will take a bit longer than me to get a job. I may pay more or i may pay less. Depends on what we see and like. Sydney is expensive though. I know that. :beer:

Or have a friend of his do this. You should have some skills coming from Bangkok.

It took 9 days for us here in South Australia. We were offered the tenacy on both of the properties we applied for.

Only gave a personal reference and a bank statement. :)
