Nationwide haven’t been an issue for me at all and I have moved significant amounts recently. They do not send verification texts to a foreign mobile but I have a card reader to get round that and don’t need it very often as I use the mobile app.
Sometimes the counter staff don’t really know, I asked to speak to someone who understood the issue properly before we moved and all was fine and she asked me to complete a mandate just in case. They send new cards out and we often use the credit card in Asia as better than Westpac.

I rang Nationwide again yesterday and this time I got a much more cooperative lady. She basically confirmed every positive thing that has been said on here, she even messaged someone directly as we spoke who came back with immediate confirmations. I must have just got a poor CS person first time.
So I can keep the account open, it won't get blocked and I can make multiple transactions in a day, from Aus.
rammygirl is spot on, use the card reader to bypass the UK only texts issue and to that end she's sending a new car reader out, just in case.
She did maintain that a 3rd party mandate wouldn't work to give my mum access though, unlike HSBC who actually think it's a good idea. Looking at each account, Nationwwides mandates give far less access than HSBCs.

Can I ask what was the mandate you completed?

Glad you got it sorted.

A Power of Attorney should allow your mum to operate your Nationwide account alongside you. The PoA would set out the limits of its use:
https://www.nationwide.co.uk/help/third-party-access/register-a-power-of-attorney/
https://www.gov.uk/lasting-power-attorney-duties
You could get a UK number via a payg or cheap contract sim as backup to the card reader lest its battery runs out. There are several, e.g. the payg Labara sim I had required me to use it every 70 (?) days for a fee-paying transaction (send my local number a text or whatever) and it could be topped up online so cost £20-30 a year to maintain the number.
