Australian house prices in the country's capital cities barely moved in the past three months, new figures released today show.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics house price index increased 0.2 per cent for the March quarter, while for the past 12 months they were up just 0.4 per cent.

Prices had increased 0.6 per cent in the December quarter.

There were good rises in Darwin (3.8 per cent), Canberra (2.6 per cent), Adelaide (2.3 per cent) and Perth (2.1 per cent) during the quarter, while prices were up 0.5 per cent in both Brisbane and Hobart.

But the problems facing Sydney and Melbourne were again highlighted.

Prices in Sydney remained unchanged while they fell 1.6 per cent in Melbourne.

Over the past 12 months, the rise in prices has been the lowest since the March quarter in 1996.

In the year to the March quarter, Sydney prices were down 3.4 per cent, they were off 1.7 per cent in Melbourne and slipped 1.3 per cent in Canberra.

Perth's housing market, however, is still strong with an annual increase of 9.9 per cent, Darwin prices were up 9.6 per cent, they were up eight per cent in Adelaide, 3.2 per cent in Hobart and 2.5 per cent in Brisbane.
