I have recently renewed our Buildings and Contents with CGU, the premium had risen about 10% over last year which I wasnt happy about, but I got quotes from 4 other companies and they were all dearer. CGU also dont charge a premium for paying monthly rather than all upfront.

Just did my insurance with NRMA, $346 for $30,000 and I got 10% off my car insurance and 10% off bike insurance they were the cheapest for me. I guess it's a case of shopping around.

We just paid about $450 for $127,000 contents. However, whilst this is cheap the premium jumps sky high for accidental damage or loss outside the home and we found this with most insurance companies. I was going to cover a couple of pieces of jewellery for outside the home ie engagement ring and a couple of pairs of diamond earings worth about $20,000 and the extra was the same as the yearly contents for the whole house!

We're using Australian Unity for the second year running. Can't fault them so far and they were the only one able to give us the policy we wanted.

I second Au unity.

I've been with them for quite a few years now. It's been around 7 years, something like that.

I used to be with them for contents only insurance when renting , and now currently ,for the past couple of years, house and contents insurance
I've never had to make a claim so do not know how efficient they are with paying out with a claim though ( that would give you a better idea of some of the "best" out there - some experiences of claims ).

My insurance is basically around the same price each year - I'm on a good few years no claim bonus , so it sort of cancels out the rise in insurance costs each year. I'm not paying any more than I did last year. If I am , it's only risen by a few $$, not very noticable.

one of the reasons I chose them in the first place was because it could be done all online and I was covered immediately, as soon as you hit the payment button, which I needed at the time , no hassles, painless and covered immediately

They have reasonable prices, at least I think so, and I have their top cover package which also covers electrical surges, power cuts ( which is a good idea if you're in Qld lol ) freezer contents etc. But it's not that necessary, their standard package is fine too

I did initially price up a few other home and contents insurers, but they were not any cheaper than Au unity at the time ( can't comment on today's prices of the other insurers ( but I'd guess they have gone up in price since when I last priced them up of course).
I haven't priced up any of the rest in very recent times as I have no reason to change my insurers .

Many of the so-called "popular ones" you see advertised on Tv etc ( you know the ones I mean) worked out more expensive for the equivalent amount of cover when I was looking around at the insurers ( probably spend all their money on TV advertising etc , so hence the cost of their insurance ) . Phoned around quite a few insurers too- but it was full of hassles, sending forms by slow mail etc etc, reps coming around etc for some of them.

It may be cheaper as a whole if you are insuring a car too , something which I am not doing with my home insurance company, because I can't - most of the insurance companies which insure homes ,cars and medical won't insure my vehicle. It's an import, specialist vehicle, so I had to use a separate insurance company for that , our other vehicles are company, so we use the company insurers for those.

Au unity are also online, "online ordering" ( which is one of the very few companies that do this) if anyone wants to read through the packages and policies and get an immediate price and not just a quote - just fill out all the online forms and submit each step, but obviously don't submit the final step - the payment. You'll have an exact cost to go on to compare with the other insurance companies you are looking at, it's something to go on at least.

They cover outside things too in it's house insurance , even things such as boats on your driveway etc are covered in the standard house insurance ( although boats unlike furniture and other items outside on your property ,they will only pay up to a certain amount out on a boat in a driveway whether it is worth a million or a just a few thousand , $1000 I think, I haven't got their insurance booklet on me , but sure it's around that figure in their policy , unlike patio furniture etc which they will pay out in full - Depending of course if you have the "standard" new replacement for old packages and not the cheapest insurance these companies offer, which only replaces what they value it at by the age of the household items )

suncorp may advertise on TV that it covers outside things like patio furniture, but they do not say they are the only ones. They say on the adverts I've seen " one of the few" or something like that ( advertising hype). You'll find that a lot of the other main insurers do cover this as well too in their standard policies, and I personally would not go with one who didn't do this - it is not a unique policy of suncorp's or any other company- advertising eh - it works lol.

Check out all the other insurers, a great deal of them do fully cover outside furniture , even paving stones you name it in their "standard" house and contents cover ( the lowest cover not included - you'd be mad to take out those very basic ones out . The packages that don't value items for the new replacement cost)

Just shop around with all the companies, do your home work , especially if you are insuring the cars too , plus medical for the best package for you. There is no single company which is the best, cheapest etc for all circumstances
cheers

HI zx10r_aus

We just had to change our bike insurance from NRMA last month as the buggers increased the premium by 600 from 1000 per annum :scared:

We shopped around and hubby now has same insurance for 800 anyway we have now started shopping on our other NRMA grouped stuff. Though I have been happy for three years with house contents only and cover for laptops and jewellery etc outside the home. We had one claim in this time for the insurance on a laptop that got fried in an electrical storm and it was replaced no worries.

So the bike insurance has been the only blip. I think it is also now we are more confident here insurance shopping around is easier, like we did before, looking for bargins and making deals.

Cheers
