I have stayed here 4-5 years ago , managed by a wonderful Israeli couple who are just so chilled, very family friendly, 1 meal a day included, big garden, great location, ranges from basic accom up to fairly delux, reasonable prices.

I have stayed in a fair few hostels all over Australia and some are suiatable for families and some are not! Lots of hostels have private rooms, rather than dorm style rooms, so depending on how big your family is that could be an option. I used The Rough Guide and Lonely Planet Guide to help me choose where to stay, generally trustworthy write ups on hostels (prices, clients, cleanliness etc.)

We stayed in a backpackers hostel in Perth for 2 weeks on a reccie. All 5 of us in a private room, 2 adults and 3 kids. We had our own bathroom, but some of the rooms didn't. It wasn't scruffy, very basic but quite cheap. Downstairs it had internet cafe, shop, served food, launderette.

I'd recommened staying in a backpackers place anytime to save alot of money.

Some hostels have really excellent family rooms - but be careful cause some are really hoprrible and full of loud, drunk, generally horrible british backpackers......

Seriously, there are some great backpackers hostels with family rooms - one that I can think of is the Gilligans backpackers in Cairns which as rooms with 2, 3,4,5,6,78 or 10 beds, private bathroom, pretty new weith excellent facilities, centre of town, pool, bar, etc

The other options is some caravan/camping parks - many of these have great cabins etc at pretty good rates during the off-season. Also, many of hte caravan parks occupy brilliant real-estate, some perched right on the top of beaches, lookouts, river mouths etc

There are lots of others, maybe lost where you want to stay and some people might be able to suggest accommodation options
