Hi there ... different for everyone .. I've been here for just over a year, OH for 16 months ... seemed like right thing to do at the time (won't bore you with why) but we should have come out together ... I've 99% settled, OH varies between .. "hey .. this is great" and "I f***ing hate this place" .. the things I miss are far less important ... are there any other rugby tragics who miss Barnes and Harrison on Sky ?? ... OH misses Waitrose, M&S, Lakeland, work mates, cold crisp winter mornings, long light nights, decent TV (even though we've got Foxtel) ...
We do talk about it and I know her "hate this place" moments are getting less and less frequent ... it's not material things ... we're really lucky ... our house is great ... just out of the pool at 11.00 at night .. it was 29c, but there is something intangible that I also ocassionally feel as well... maybe it's because we're older (early 50s) - but talking to our friends who have emigrated ... same mix .. one took three years to settle, a couple 1 - 2 years, others until they got thru Immi ... if I can generalise - blokes seem to settle easier
Loads of advice on lots of the threads on BE about getting out to pubs/ clubs / church / RSL / etc etc and meeting people, easier said than done ... but the plonker who you would never in a million years normally talk to, might just introduce you to the couple who will become your best friends ..
I guess its easy to underestimate the huge move (not in miles) because everything looks kinda familiar in Oz ... as opposed to moving to Spain / France where there's a different language / culture ...
Anyway enough rambling ... hope you enjoy Oz and what it's got to offer ...
David

Hi
Hang in there, I can understand where you are coming from. I moved to NZ with OH and son and I loved it to begin with, it was an adventure. Then we started getting photos from grandparents of son with them in different places - and I thought 'what the hell have I done'. Then I fell pregnant and that was it, I couldn't wait to get back to England. I missed everyone so very much.
We stuck it out for just under a year and we have been back in England for just coming up for 3 years (oh my god where has the time gone!) but please stick it out - I now hate it here and wish we hadn't come home, what did I come home for - the cold, intense crime and in such young people, drugs galore and no english culture or community!!!! We are in the middle of getting our visas to come to OZ!!!!!! And we can't wait.
My son and my OH can't wait to get their quad bikes again and jet skis, the beach close by (we do live by the sea now, but its not the same), and me, well the heat, the large homes and of course the swimming pool, which I have promised myself!

Ok here I am in Melbourne! beautiful country, friendly people, warm weather, nice house......can't stop bawling my eyes out. I have 3 kids----they love it -- Hubby ---- loves it!!
Is this normal? Of course meeting a Red back, a white tail and huntsman in one week was a bit unlucky, so was getting locked in my garage and injuring my back and elbow!!
I all honesty I didn't actually want to come here (ungrateful moobag I know I know!) I have friends who all but spat in my face when I told them our plans to move to Oz so many brits want to come!!
I want to love it so much but I am really struggling.
Please someone help!!! Tell me I'll wake one day humming waltzing matilda whilst burning shrimp on the barbie!! and not pining for a frozen windscreens, Ice on the train tracks, inadequate central heating and houses with more Xmas lights than National lampoons Christmas vacation !
How can anyone NOT love it here?
