Friend has just told me about NRMA she says they are cheaper the more insurance you have with them ie, car etc. Haven't used them yet but they look competitive and we need car insurance soon, so will give them a go...

NRMA have a very good claims service, but I found them to be quite expensive. (Only to be expected, if they are better at paying out)
AAMI have a nice girl that does their adverts...
Their prices are not to bad either.
Budget Direct are worth checking for an online quote...

SGIO definitely. Great customer service and a very competitive price. Allianz are pants and just don't care about you.

We found Westpac to be quite reasonably priced and offered excellent cover for what we needed.

After having worked in Insurance, one thing I can guarantee is that every insurer will have at least two types of customers:
- Those that are very happy with them, their prices and their service
- Those that are very UN-happy with them, their prices and their service

So, what is the outcome of this question? Nothing!
All big, popular insurer are mentioned here ... so, just go for one, it doesn't matter because I can gurantee you, once you try to claim ... they all will be nasty.
Good Luck!

We are with QBD and have found them brilliant. We had the bad luck to get burgled in 2007, we got cleaned out. QBD gave us the cash up front to get a new computer about a week after the burglary. They were just so good. We have since moved and had to claim for storm damage and again, they have been great.

We use Allianz for both car and home, our car insurance was $200 cheaper than the next popular insurer and our contents insurance was $80 cheaper than the others, I found Allianz offer excllent customer services they answer the phone in seconds rather than hours and will even call you back via email if you require. This is my personal choice but obviously if you find a cheaper insurance quote then use that company.

I am not saying that the cheapest will be worst, some times it could be very good, but it is the claims service that really counts, not the price.

We have been with AAMI for years and have claimed with them only last year. They were very good and there were no hassles however, we have decided to change and go with Real Insurance as they are very competive and give you back 10% of premiums paid after 3 years of no claims. You also get a discount if you take out multiple cover with them.

AAMI didnt get a very good rep after the bushfires - mainly for building insurance though. Some folk were definitely in the not happy department and we heard many tales of woe when they were the insurance company - mainly with the time to respond to the claim. NRMA doesnt do too badly especially if, as someone said, you hold multiple policies with them and I have found them to be pretty good with claims as well.
