hlep with schooling
Hi, I am getting all sorts of conflicting reports on schooling for my children. We have 2 boys age 5 and 10 and are looking at moving to NSW at the end of March. If we put them into state schools do we need to make "voluntary" contributions to the school? Is it better to pay private and roughly how much are we looking at? Sonia xx

"Voluntary contributions" vary from school to school but around here are about the $100 a term mark. Private schools are going to range from about $3kpa (systemic Catholic) through to $15 -20k pa. The public/private choice is really up to you - around 30% of parents choose a private education (closer to 50% in ACT) for their kids. Most parents, if they are going to make that choice, will consider it most seriously for HS and the rate of non gov participation is higher for older kids than for primary age kids so you have a bit of time to consider where your eldest may want to be in HS.
