I second that statement - make you agent work for their fee and be more useful!! I know it doesnt help your current dilema but they dont seem to be supporting you the way they should!

I still wish you all the best with the whole situation - and keep us updated with what is happening.

I wouldn't mind but it's 7 years employment as an electrician and it's the last reference we need. Have proof of qualifications sorted out, references from all other employers apart from the 2 that are deceased.

I think i am going to gas myself in the oven, oh s**t i can't it's electric

I am beginning to wonder if it's worth all the hassle and stress, i feel like we are never even going to get past the TRA stage.

Oh well, another day another dollar
Dont given in just think it will be all worth it when you get that visa in your passport. Is there anyone who worked with him then that could do a testimonal. It might work. Keep going.

very true, a stat dec will have to do as John's old line manager is still refusing to sign. I am going to phone the agents in the morning and see what they say.

Was telling my mum about your predicament - she said " well I'd tell the miserable so and so that I intent to go to the papers and get her face splashed across the front page saying by not signing the reference shes ruining or lifes" It might be an option to get local/regional newspapers interested it may also be that people your husband worked with will read the article and get in touch or it may shame her in to actually signing the reference for you.
Just another avenue for you to explore if all else fails.
Good luck

no not a good idea
burnt bridges and all that

once you have your tra and visa and you`ve made the move
( it will happen ) you need to get an ARTC
Australian recognised trade certificate
this is applied for via the TRA deptartment
and they will call any ex employers who have supplied references

like i said dont burn the bridges just yet

ps why do they refuse to sign it

They were reconmended by Johns nephew who used them and have been in Perth since March so i'm not saying they aren't any good. they are very nice in fact.

We had similar problem and just went to inland revenue and they printed off a letter from their records to prove that hubby was employed with the companies that we could not get references for as all had closed down.

These were accepted no problems for TRA

Good luck

tried that, there records don't go back far enough - only 7 years - and John doesn't have any wage slips or p60's and his wages were paid in cash.

Welcome(or goodbye) to the UK!
For all the bagging here of "Aussie work practices"-heres the thing-that NEVER happens in OZ(except by "nervous-pom" expats.)
THe truly sick practice of Brits not writing references(for fear of litigation) is a true example of the "catch-22" nature of british society-the little thing most expats start forgeting once they are in oz for too long!
Yet when Aussies behave in their relaxed "jobs-for-mates" attitude they get bagged-and when they react negatively to English expats with their "decades ahead practices"(of causing others headaches) thats because they realise that someone might piss in their well.
Learn that "dot-the-i's-cross-the-t's" types arent heroes in Oz offices(thank god) as they are in the UK.
This all comes to a head in immigration processes where different cultures clash-failing to understand the other.
Most of all in the arena of licences.
