Historical UK/Australia exchange rates 1964
Hi.
Does anyone know how many Australian pounds I would get for 1,000 British pounds in 1964?
Note.
In Britain in 1964, I was earning about 10 British pounds per week.
In Australia, I earned about 30 Australian pounds per week, changing to 60 dollars per week in 1966.
Thanks,
Norm.

Thanks SoS.
That would make 1,000 UK pounds worth about 1,250 Oz pounds.
Several convertors give an amount in Oz dollars instead of pounds.
I must assume they are just doubling the number of Oz Pounds to arrive at a dollar amount.
Thanks.

That sounds spot on, to me. I went from Australia to England in 1963. My wage in Queensland was 1000 pds Australian, and in London six months later it was 1000 pds Sterling. But the exchange rate was one pd STG = one pd five shillings Oz.

Hi Gordon,
You said, "the exchange rate was one pd STG = one pd five shillings Oz."
I have found a few sources which indicate that would be right.
One pound sterling could be exchanged for one pound five shillings Oz in 1964.
Thanks to all respondents.
Norm.

I should have made clear, that the thousand pounds salary was per year - not per month! Plus Luncheon Vouchers! (Do they still have Luncheon Vouchers, in England?)

Hi Gordon.
Yes, I realized it was annual salary you were talking about.
I haven't heard reference to the Luncheon Voucher system for many years.

Wonder when Luncheon Vouchers stopped.... I was getting 50p per day when I left London in 1980.

Re: Historical UK/Australia exchange rates 1964
It's interesting to look back at historical exchange rates. I've exchanged dollars to pounds at a rate of $1.33 = £1 (proceeds of an Oz house sale transferred to UK) and I've exchanged pounds to dollars at a rate of over £1 to $3.02 (saved UK earnings and transferred some wealth to Oz at these rates which was a no brainer, especially when Oz interest rates were double those in the UK) so have experience of a very wide range of rates! In the short/medium term it seems that $2 is a barrier that the rate won't stay above for long and it is now heading to the mid/high $1.80's.
