Do photograph the car when you pick it up, especially if there are any marks or scratches (tell the hire company if they aren't already noted) so they can't try to get you to pay for damage you didn't do. Likewise photograph the car when you take it back. We got conned into paying for damage we didn't do on two separate occasions.
