I'd have thought anyone about to enter the market and paying inflated prices - or anybody who may have empathy.

I hear you brother but all this speculation winds me up. For every 'expert' saying that there will be a crash there is another saying that there won't. The market will do what it has to do based on loads of economic factors that we have no control over.

I'd be surprised if my house is worth what I paid for it last year, probably dropped 50k or so.

And were you equally vociferous in pointing out the counter-arguments during the last 3 years of the bullish real estate babble? (or should that be bullshit real estate babble?).

For those waiting at the sidelines with a little cash (certainly not enough to buy into the property market at current prices) at hand, the risk of a property correction means the chance to pick up their dream house at (finally) a reasonable, not-out-of-this-world-and-into-the-next-galaxy price.

I'm shamefully, selfishly hoping for a correction, from that point of view alone

That's right, I'm looking at it as the opportunity to grab a little weekend retreat. They'll have to go down about 50% for that to happen though.

I've always been optimistic (as with most other things in life) about the property market. Now I'm ambivilent towards it. I kind of believe there will be a soft landing in the market but what do I know? I just get wound up when 'experts' or anyone with an opinion says 'this will definitely happen or won't happen'. I still believe property is a good investment but I have always taken a long term view to it. Property, over the years, HAS gone up shitloads in value and in the future will continue to rise but there will be troughs along the way.

That doesn't detract from the fact that you were effectively saying "***** you" to those people "about to enter the market and paying inflated prices."

Nice

I'm just so nervous about buying here. Prices have certainly come off the boil - I've seen advertised prices at $50K less than first advertised so God knows what you get with a bit of haggling - but the houses are still in my view overpriced for what you get compared with other areas of the world.

Not only that, but even on my relatively decent salary and with a hefty deposit, the mortgage would be so much of a killer that I'd seriously question why I was here!
