HELP - Suburbs Perth
Hey
My husband and I finally got our visas 2 weeks ago and plan to move to Perth in July this year. He has a job in Kewdale and we are looking around this area to rent a house. Places such as East Victoria Park / Victoria park etc have been top of the list. We need some advice really.
We are a young couple who enjoy socialising and dont want to go to far for a good meal and lovely wine but dont want to be too far from Kewdale. Would Winthrop / Melville / Applecross be too far away?
I know these threads are all over the site but any help you can give us - we want to start life in Perth in a nice area and any help we can get is appreciated.
Thanks Gayle

I would avoid Vic Park, lots of rentals, crime hotspot, see here http://www.police.wa.gov.au/AboutUs/...tistics#Search
Applecross is pricy but a very nice area. Also Melville and Winthrop are good suburbs. For Restaurants/Cafés I would go to Subiaco, Leederville, nice is also Napoleon Street in Cottesloe.
Cheers

Little in Perth - expecially south of the river (Vic is SE, Applecross is South) is very far away from anywhere else in terms of time.
Depends on how much cash you have - Vic Park I think has a certain vibrancy (inner city feel) although most of the areas outside of the city are pretty dead at night. As another poster mentioned, there are only a few areas which are happening at night - Leederville, Subiaco, Mt Lawley, Northbridge so I'm afraid you will need to move to be near those areas if that is what you want. Areas around Kewdale and that SE Corner generally are not renowned for their atmosphere.
I think Canning Bridge is good - nice pub, good restaurants and near to a railway station. Applecross is very near but you will pay high rental prices.
I like Winthrop - but that's because I have a young family - I think I might get a bit depressed there if I was childless and into other things.
Another option would be to get in close to the city - your husband's commute will be against the flow of traffic so it should be relatively easy. This opens up South Perth - a very nice area but expensive and even West Perth (ditto) and, my personal favourite - Northbridge.
I have a colleague (head of dept at a school so not your average criminal!) who has an apartment in Northbridge and absolutely loves living there)
Good luck. Remember that Perth is as geographically large as London but it does not have the same feel. In London you can live in just about any area and still get a good selection of wine bars, restaurants, clubs. Not so in Perth. Most of it is as dead as the proverbial parrot at night. This was a shock to me when I arrived - I thought - major city it will have lots of little pockets of atmosphere.
It doesn't!

I don't know when you last visited Albany Highway at night, but as far as restaurants and cafes are concerned, it's one of the best-serviced areas in the city, in my estimation. What kind of food do you want? Chinese, Japanese, Korean? Turkish, Lebanese, Thai, Mexican? Greek, Italian, Cambodian? It's all there, between Brando's Pizzaria at the junction of Teddington Street and the H'way, up to the Food Hall just before Shepperton Road, together with fish-and chips and bog-standard Australian cuisine.
If the OP would be happy with an established home in an established suburb, there are all sorts of choices available near to Kewdale, St. James, Kensington, Queens Park among them.

It has quite a lot of older houses with character, on smaller blocks, reminds me a bit of some areas of Melbourne.

I have a few friends that live (own) in East Vic Park, and they love it, I think its a great area they've never had any issues with Crime etc, there's plenty to rent there, its not Subi but you can walk to a selection of pubs/restaurants/shops etc, its close to the City and has good transport links, would be an easy commute for your husbands job. A wide variety of property, so could suit anything from a low $200pw rental budget upwards.

Most of my rental properties are around Vic Park so I am biased. The area is OK and does have a reasonable nightlife.
Any of the river suburbs would do,Maylands,Ascot,Bayswater.Go out a bit further and you have Inglewood .
Kewdale is easy to reach from anywhere as it is on a meeting point of Tonkin and Leach highways.
When we lived in Maylands I would go to work in Kewdale on my pushbike across Garret road bridge, around 30 mins.
Perth (probably Australia) is not really the place to come to for vibrant nightlife, more of an early to bed ,early to rise for work country, for blue collar trades.
Most of the riverside suburbs have gone through modernisation over the last 10 yrs and are now des res.
