Help with Spa Prep/installation please!!!
1 Attachment(s)
Some of you may remember I did a thread almost 3 years ago when I was wanting to know more about spa/swimming pools.
http://britishexpats.com/forum/showt...&highlight=Spa Well I'm finally able to afford it after installing air con and solar power!, and have put a deposit down on a 5-6 seater spa (the one in the picture) I really need advice from anyone who has done the preparation prior to getting the spa delivered, as I seem to be going round in circles about what to do first! I know that my spa requires hard wiring. Have been in touch with sparky, but not very helpful, and asking me to measure how far it is from elec box to spa. Have no way of knowing that as haven't got spa yet. Does he come after the spa has been delivered? I also know I need a slab/stable surface to put the spa on. Have got 2 quotes but not many people returning to us with prices, and what we've been quoted very expensive :( If I had a slab put down I would need to make provision so the wiring could be done afterwards (tubing) Friends have said get a slab so big that there is a small boarder around the spa so it's easier for the sparky. But how do I continue the flooring beyond the spa with it looking crap? Have cleared the land and it is all back to sand, so that's one less thing to do. So what's best way to go about it? Probably worrying too much, but just seem to be getting nowhere! Any advice would be greatly appreciated. TIA :) |

TIA :) The sparky should come fit the electrics before you get the spa delivered as the spa people normally connect it before they leave and in our case also filled it with water to check it was working OK. The sparky will connect the electrics from the electricity box to wherever you are placing the spa. Do you need a pool fence around your spa as I'm not sure of the legalities in your state but you need to check it out mate:thumbup: Enjoy the bubbles - don't let the OH in after eating anything spicy. the bubbles won't be the spa:lol: |

All you need to do is get a slab of concrete big enough to fit the spa on to and don't forget you may need steps in front to climb up so make sure room for that as well. Make it big enough to comfortably fit the spa and steps on and the bigger the better really.

Does he need to come and lay piping before the slab is laid? There are steps included in the deal so will need to make the pad bigger for them. I also know it has to be 100mm thick. I have already worked out where fence will go if required. Although I know 2 people who have spas in my suburb and they haven't got fencing or self locking doors/windows. |

The sparky just puts a power point in within the required guidelines due to it being a wet area. Basically that's all the sparky does i.e. puts a plug in to plug in your spa and it is direct from the fuse box. |

Re: Help with Spa Prep/installation please!!!
You will need fencing around the spa.It will have to be of the same requirements as if you had a pool in.We have two spas(dont ask).We have fencing around one and even then we had to moderate it.We have no water in the other one.Have you thought of how you are getting it in to your garden. We had to have ours craned in.Roughly $1,000.It is hooked up for electricity and gas.It was expensive getting it hooked up to gas.Good luck with yours.

"A spa pool is not required to be surrounded by a child-resistant barrier so long as access to the water contained in the spa pool is restricted, in accordance with the standards prescribed by the regulations, at all times when the spa pool is not in actual use." We created our hard standing ourselves (hardcore and concrete) and then the OH ran the wire under the house and through conduit so there was one end of the wire near the fuse box and the other near where the spa was to be located (Sparky said for him to do that to avoid him having to crawl under the house). We then got the spa installed and placed on the concrete and the sparky to connect both ends of the wire and install a suitable connection at the fuse box (the spa had an isolator fitted already) and filled the spa, sat around waiting for it to get bearable to jump in then off we went. But we did buy a second hand spa via eBay so had to arrange everything ourselves, if you are buying new then ask to dealer. |

y buggers, serves themselves right!!! [Portable pools and spas covered by the new laws If your portable pool or spa can hold more than 300 millimetres of water, has a volume of more than 2000 litres or has a filtration system, the new laws apply to you. You will need to: obtain a certificate from a licensed building certifier stating that your pool complies with the pool safety standard, before filling the pool or spa with more than 300mm of water obtain a building approval register your pool or spa by 4 May 2011. If you are selling, buying or leasing your property a pool on or after 1 December 2010, a safety certificate is required from a licensed pool safety inspector. Alternatively, the portable pool or spa can be removed.] |

Basically that's all the sparky does i.e. puts a plug in to plug in your spa and it is direct from the fuse box. It doesn't have a socket to plug into as mine needs to be fully hard wired into the spa (new guidelines I think) So all we have is a weatherproof switch to switch on and off. Anyway they came out and did it yesterday, so that part sorted. They will come back once we have had the spa delivered (and subject to fencing regulations being met (if any) to connect it up. Will have to phone the council as can't find anything on their website regarding pool/spa fence. Just waiting for the slab to be put down now. This is being done by a friend who is a concreter. Hopefully should have it in a couple of weeks as the spa is in stock and ready when we are  Thanks for you're help everyone  |
Re: Help with Spa Prep/installation please!!!
Tiawamutu;
regarding the spa, is the Spa fully electrical or gas. decide the position then measure from the spa to the main electrical switchboard in meters. then dig the trench in the garden to the house it must be at least 500mm deep to the top of the conduit, the conduit must be in bright orange conduit i recomend you use 38mm orange pvc conduit when you join the conduits make sure you use conduit glue when joining conduits to stop any water from entering the conduits. then you also buy what called sweeping bends for each end where the conduit comes out of the ground at the house & the spa through the concrete or the footings ready for the concrete pour. if your concreting the area make sure you have the conduit sticking out of the ground is inside the Spa area near the electrical connections part of the Spa. most 4 seater Electrical spa's draw about 15 Amps of power thus making the cable size minimum 4.00mm cable single phase (2 Core & earth). depending on the distance from the home of the spa if its more than about 60 meters in total you may have to increase the cable size to 6.00mm cable (expensive). remember pvc conduit in the ground before any concrete is done. then get the electriccian to look at the switchboard, your Spa shall have to be on its own circuit from the main board & also must have a safety switch connected (RCD) this can be installed at the main board or inside the Spa unit next to the electrical connections. All water tight. |

Re: Help with Spa Prep/installation please!!!
Just filled our yesterday after the summer. Prefer to use it on cold dark nights, than hot summer days, so to save power, we drain it in the summer.
Ours is on a slab quite a bit bigger than the spa to allow for steps and access to get teh cover on and off. Electric is on its own RCD protected circuit from the mains board and runs beneath the concrete slab up and into the underneath of the spa inside. Look at using the Nature2 spa sticks www.nature2.com they mean you can run with a lot less chemicals, making the spa much nicer. We also use Nature2 in our pool to great effect. |

That's what we are doing, but our slab will only have a 10cm border each side of spa as we are thinking of putting feature pavers around the slab or maybe decking. We have the power installed under ground now ready, and it has it's own switch and is hard wired into the meter box (with it's own switch) This will be under the slab like yours. Slab is being laid on Saturday  Our spa has the Ozone filtration system. It's a natural oxidizer, purifier, sanitizer. Destroys algae, bacteria, mold, viruses, prolongs equipment life. It's supposed to cut down on chemical usage by up to 90% Getting excited now :) Just a question for you Red. How long after you fill it can you actually use the spa? |
Re: Help with Spa Prep/installation please!!!

We were eager to get in ours asap so used hot water as well as cold water for the initial fill and had to wait about 4 hours for it to get warm enough. |

Re: Help with Spa Prep/installation please!!!
Another question.
Those of you who have spas, did you bother to get the cover lifter or do you just lift it off manually? If manually, how hard is it to do? |

We lift manually, light as a feather:thumbup: Thought that when she showed me it. Looked quite difficult to do but she said it made the job easier  Did look messy too I thought |

Re: Help with Spa Prep/installation please!!!
We do ours manually and its pretty easy although our cover is getting towards the end of its life so is getting heavier to do now.
I looked at the lifters but most required a significant amount of space behind the spa to work and I didn't want to position ours that way |

Will have to phone the council as can't find anything on their website regarding pool/spa fence. If you are in the Joondalup Council area, then the pool and spa fence coordinator is called Barrie Beetham. He is really nice and helpful. His email address is: Barrie.BeethamATjoondalup.wa.gov.au Obviously replace AT with @ ;) You can email him your house/garden plan and he'll tell you what you need. |
Re: Help with Spa Prep/installation please!!!
Think we'll just sse how we go without the lifter for now.

Spa's in!
All happened so quickly! Looking great. Very happy with it. Thanks for your advice everyone. May look at those Nature2 spa sticks that you were on about red. See how I go with the chlorine first. It only needs minimal amount though. |
