Default HELP! Sending jewellery unaccompanied to OZ,will I be charged customs/GST on arrival?

Hopefully someone can help me, I have tried sending Mr Mover an email but he has gone offline
We are moving back to OZ soon (I'm Australian, hubby on spouse visa). We have shipped our furniture with John Masons and we are travelling for 2 months through Asia on the way home and we don't want to wear our wedding rings/watches while travelling.
We know we can send these things through Parcelforce (fully insured) but what happens when it arrives in Oz(sending it over to my parents house). Will they try and charge us tax/GST etc, or will we be ok as they are personal effects which we have owned for more than 12 months.

If anyone knows the answer please let me know. i have emailed OZ customs but it may take a while to respond and we need to post the items today.

Thanks

Julza

Hi Julza This is not an exact answer for u I'm afraid. I am a customs agent in the UK and p/effects that are shipped for persons moving home are of course not subject to tax (unless they are new and less than 6 months old).

I have had a look at (suggest u also visit) www.frommers.com (activities). States that personal property being mailed back from England (TO Aus) should be marked 'Australian goods returned' to avoid payment of duty. (customs enquries in Sydney is Tel 02 9213 2000.

Hope this helps in some way. I am sure you would not pay and duty/GST. My opinion

Regards
Barry
