I knew that I'd be setting myself up for getting the p*ss taken :D :D :D
As Steve says, this subject has been done to death. The options are basically :- 1. Get your TV converted to decode AUS PAL correctly (can be expensive and will probably invalidate the warranty). 2. Buy a seperate device (VCR, SAT, Cable, etc.) which you can put between the RF aerial lead and the TV. 3. Sell the UK TV and buy a whopping great big plasma screen once you get to AUS. I'm making good progress in talking the missus into going for option 3 although it's been hard work so far :D |
Option 3 for me Nobby.
English TV flogged off ASAP. WAHAYYYYYYYYYYY a whopping big TV for TT..........magic. :D Told the missus there is no debate on this point. Originally posted by EssexNobby Here's the nerdy explanation of why a UK tv won't work properly in AUS. Apologies on advance for being an electronics geek ! The reason that the VCR won't put sound into a UK tv set is because you are using an RF cable connection (i.e. a standard aeriel connection lead) which has video and audio signals mixed onto the single cable. UK tv systems use the PAL method of transmission, the same as the AUS tv systems. They both however use a slightly different flavour of PAL, and the difference is in the audio sub-carrier. What this means is that a UK tv can receive PAL signals of the AUS type but won't be able to decode the sound properly, hence no sound. The way around this is to get hold of any device that has an AUS PAL tv tuner in it and then take the seperate audio and video signals from that device and plug them into the UK tv, then both video and audio signals will be received fine by the tv. The easiest way to do this is to get an AUS VCR, feed an AUS tv signal into it via an RF cable (standard coaxial tv signal cable) and then wire up the AUS VCR audio and video outputs into the back of your UK tv (either by seperate compostie video and Left/Right audio phono leads or easier with a SCART cable). Another way is to get a cable/SAT decoder and take the seperate audio/video signals that it produces and feed them into the back of your UK tv. Just thought that someone might like to know the nerdy reasons why this tv problem appears :) :) :) Mental note - remember EssexNobby is the man for all problems electrical !!! May be needing your help when I make the move - tax and finance no problem, electrical applicances not a clue !!;) |
EEEK:
Not long bought a Plasma with a seperate tuner box, I assume I could just buy a new tuner box for the TV from the manufacturer over there. THe VCR isnt coming, but the DVD multi region is so I assume that will be OK? Will the AMP and speakers work ok too it's just prologic amp, not a tuner/reciever. Oh and my lad would like to know if the XBOX and gamecube will be ok, will games work that we buy in Oz or does he need new ones? :p |
Originally posted by HiddenPaw But not all UK TVs wil convert...so in that respect, isn't Nobby's solution to hook up to an Aussie device bringing in a signal correct? Ok, just the posh one's amongst us then with decent telly's! :D |
Originally posted by SteveBannister Hi Colin, Wow....DeJa Vu, or what!! We've had this conversation before, haven't we? I'm sure we have! Yes, we did......and every time I suggested spending the $80 to get the tv converted so people wouldn't have to mess about with extra leads, buying oz video recorders and going down to tandy's for 'twiddly bits'. And what happens? People take the easy option and buy an aussie video recorder at who knows what price and find that they still have problems! Get you TV converted, that way you don't need to use up the scart socket. That leaves the scart socket free for your dvd/playstation/whatever. You don't need to be changing leads over and taking trips to tandy's! I dread to think what money people are wasting on bits and trips they don't need. Don't bother EssexNobby, they've all been told before! http://britishexpats.com/forum/showt...&highlight=pal http://britishexpats.com/forum/showt...&highlight=pal Steve :D Yes that would have been great if we could have found anyomne in UK or out here to adapt the TV I have been given all sorts of answers why and I even contacted the makers direct - both of them - and got no assistance. However $20 for the twiddly bit and it now works fine BUT we have a stero tv and there is only one sound outlet on the VCR. IF anyone finds an australian electrician who is capable and willing to change our tv's (in the new south wales area) PLEASE PLEASE let us know. :D :D  |

Hey there AussieDreams.
Sounds like you will have to either buy a new TV tuner box or buy another device that has an AUS PAL tuner in it (i.e. VCR, SAT, etc.) and plug it's output into the input of your plasma screen. I'd go for the latter as you'll probably be buying either a VCR and/or a SAT box when you get to Aus anyway (deffo want a SAT box if the various comments on this forum regarding cr*p Aus terrestrial tv are to be believed :D) Your lad's games consoles should work fine, just remember that you need to use seperate audio/video connections (RCA cables, SCART, S-VHS) rather than the RF aerial lead. My son is taking his PS2 and Dreamcast, both will work ok. I'm also taking our multi-region DVD player and that will work OK too. :) |
Cheers Nobby
