Mick & Suzie.
Still in the UK, and heading for Brisbane, not Melbourne, but would like to welcome you to this very friendly neighbourhood all the same.

Neil.

Hello,

I've been having fun reading all the messages and thought it time to add my own.

We are also thinking of Melbourne or maybe Northern Tasmania - any thoughts would be appreciated.

Anyone out there familiar with the Business Skills - Investor (state sponsored) #165 visa process? It would appear saving up may be our best (only) route.

Again, any help welcomed!

Hello & Welcome!

As Smudgo says, the Britvics site has quite a lot of local details, which may be of more specific help.

Re the visa application: not sure which stage you are at, but this is a good palce to start:
http://www.liveinvictoria.vic.gov.au/

Also there are several good Emigration Agencies, many of whom offer free assessments or visas on a 'no visa, no fee' basis. A lot of people on this forum like GoMatilda (see http://www.gomatilda.com/).

The biggest problem with Melbourne is that there are so many different areas to choose from: e.g. smart apartments in the CBD, acreage far out of the city, some very nice green suburbs in the SE, mountain-side houses with views in the Dandenongs, seaside properties (that's what we went for in the end), and almost anything inbetween. It all depends on your personal preferences and budget, but can be very hard to decide.

I can really recommend a 'research' trip out here first, before you decide where to live, though - it made all the difference for us.

Good luck with the visa application & move, & hope to see you over here sometime!

Cheers,
Anya.

Hi,

Thanks.

We visited last April and really liked in and around Melbourne. So we will probably visit again sometime next year. Any suggestions for places to go? We like beaches and hills.

Illuminating site!

One place just outside Melbourne in the mountains is the William Ricket Sanctury.
This place is just amazing. William Ricket was a guy who did these fantastic lifelike sculptures mainly of aboriginals and placed them in this mountainside paradise. These things look like they are part of the mountain. Even if you are not an "arty farty" type, you'll need to be pretty thick skinned not to be knocked out of your socks.
The entry is pretty cheep and the drive there is great too. Next door to it is a cafe with really nice food and you may get to see the owner feeding the kukaburra's (spelling), Bonus!
As you may be able to tell........We liked it.

Scotty.
