Hi joanne,

my hubby is a time served mechanic, but now works as an NVQ assessor for mechanics....

he thinks it might be the air conditioning that can be run from a rubber belt like a fan belt and that it might be this belt that has snapped causing the problems you describe.

Hope you get it sorted soon.

The rattle could have been the bearing collapsing in the water pump or air con compressor hence eventually seizing and making the belt slip causing the burning smell. I am not a trained mechanic so it's only my opinion.

Just to make you feel better we are flying to OZ on the 5th Sep and my 4x4 has just had the cylinder head replaced (did it myself and still cost £800). Gearbox now playing up and needs a rebuild, now in the garage with potential repair bill of £1000+. I hope that makes you feel better. You have to laugh or else you would cry .

I tell you...I must have saved ££££££ over the years with hubby being a mechanic! Only got to get my car through one more MOT (sept) and then it can go on the scrap heap next year when we go! Hope you get yours sorted Dave.
