HELP before the air turns blue and we waste money
We have the uk televisions - working through australian VCR machines. This means we can only tape the programme that is being watched OR do not use the tv while the programme is being taped.
IF..... we buy another australian VCR OR a DVD recorder and HOOK IT UP IN LINE on the SAME television....
Can we then view one programme through one VCR and tape a DIFFERENT channel through the other VCR/DVD
Please Please tell me and if necesssary advise the set up in words of one syllable before we go nuts.
Thank you Thank you Thank you (I hope)

No deadly serious I do not want to waste money on a new machine eoither vcr or dvd if it will not do what we want.... this is to tide us over until we can afford Foxtel when our uk tv's will be ok without a vcr machine (we are told)
Do you mean YES it will work and if spo what specially needs to be done ??

DVD recorder would be no good as there is no TV tuner within the DVD recorder.
Video- yes you can run 2 VCRs in line but you would be better off running the 2 VCRs into the TV on different scart sockets to save any interference and just link the 2 machines with a Y splitter for the arial.
This is our view.

Another suggestion is to get a digital set top box. If you have a spare connector you can watch digital TV using that and record using your VCR.
Just check that you can get digital in your area.

Yes, as DMF says you don't need to hook up 2 VCRs in line, you should be able to use separate input connectors into the TV.
- If your UK TVs are reasonably modern, they should have either two SCART sockets or a SCART and Line In sockets. Hook one VCR to each, using a SCART to Line In adapter if necessary (available from Dick Smith or Jaycar) This way you can use one VCR simply as a TV tuner as you are now, and the other one to record TV from another channel
- If your TV has only one SCART/Line In, you can still do this but one of the VCRs will have to go in through the aerial, i.e. the old fashioned way, and you can tune in a spare TV channel to the VCR frequency. Not 100% sure if you can do this with an Oz VCR and UK TV though. Try it with the one you've got before buying a new one.
- If that doesn't work you can hook them up in line, with the 2nd VCR connected to the Line In sockets on the first one, and set the channel first one to AV to "see through" the first one to the second one.
Hope that doesn't make it more confusing for you! It was good to meet you both yesterday, by the way.

Thank you everyone for your advices I shall print them off and paste them in front of Colin so that he/we know what to to and what to expect.
It was good meeting with everyone at the Sydney meet - the children got me a bit homesick for those I left behind in uk.

We bought an aussie TV portable whilst we were waiting for our British TV to come over - interestingly we now use it to help 'record' TV on our british VCR (as a backup - as the ozzie vcr is always engaged displaying images on our british TV)
It is a little know fact that most modern TV's have AV out (as well as the usual AV in). If it has a scart it definately has AV out...through the same socket as you use for AV in.
The disadvantage of this though is that you have to have the TV on whilst the VCR is recording - on the same channel obviousley.
We use this method to record a programme on one channel whilst we watch another in the living room (we just have the aussie tv on in the bedroom, muted, hooked up to our british tv that records the programme through scart.
