Hello and a question about Queensland Education
Hi,
My family and I are hopefully off to Cairns soon, but would like some information about schools and education in Queensland.
We have 4 sons, aged 15, 12, 10 and 7, all "normal" boys we think, but recently we have been told that our 12 year old, year 7 student, is a gifted and talented student . We have found out that here that means he will have more options made available to him, he will be given specialist tutition to help him achieve his potential and he will be added to the register of g&t kids.
What we would like to know is if he will be given the same chance to advance in Oz as he will here?
Thanks in advance
Helen

Re: Hello and a question about Queensland Education
Hi,
Thank you both for the links, I've now got some reading to do.
From what I've found out so far it looks like he will probably get more opportunies and the chance to do better at school there than if we stay here as Australia seems to pick up on these kids earlier than they do in the U.K. Here they don't do anything about it until secondary school which is a shame for him as his reception teacher said he was extremely bright but it now seems he has missed out on 7 years of extra stimulation which we haven't always been able to give him.
We have been looking into schools, but have decided to wait until we get there to make a final decision as we are finding it hard to decide on a school when we only have internet sites to look at. We would rather visit the schools to see what they are like as we feel that something as important as your childs education should not be left to chance.
Thanks again

Re: Hello and a question about Queensland Education
I was looking at some websites for private high schools last night and noticed one of them offered an acceleration programme for G&T kids, sorry but for the life of me I can't remember which one it was.
This was the list I was recommended to look through:
Brisbane College
Brisbane Grammar
St Margarets
Sommerville House
Clayfield College
St Ritas
St Adens
St Peters
Hillbrook
It's my impression that private education much more common place in Oz than in some other countries.
Whoops, just realised you're headed for Cairns but perhaps this info will be of some use to others
