Talking Heaven is my own pillow, dooner and bed!!! yipeeeeee

Today the furniture arrived. YES!! (sorry polly)

At 8am the truck turned up with 2 removal men (who were slightly erm, more well toned than their pommie counter parts!!) They took out all the furniture in lightning speed and placed it into the allocated rooms. Next the boss (lazy one) went back to the depot while the other one (slightly more dishy, he wasn't stupid !) stayed to help unpack. This happened twice more and then the guys stayed to help unpack all of the other boxes that we wanted. They were from pickfords and were very proffesional.

The packing at the uk end was through a company called interpak (part of excess international) and was done very well. We had a couple of minor breaks, a toy and a small dint in the chest freezer door. we did have one catastrophy where, due to bad packing, a hand made original lamp got smashed which was a little heart breaking as its fairly irreplaceable.

The funny of the day was when the guys brought in my very large football st Georges cross flag that had been taped to a box. Conversation went something like
"eeerrruugghh, look at this bit of dirty material attached to this"
"oh yeah" says quick witted pommie sheila "could have done with that when the ruggers was on"
DEATHLY SILENCE!!!!!!
Then i topped it off by saying "god, its like with the Germans, we don't mention the war, ya know!!!"

At the moment i am tired and exhasted (never realised i had 16 boxes worth of just KITCHEN things, let alone the countless heavies like linen and towels etc) But i feel like its been the best christmas EVER, not only did i get to unwrap stacks of parcels, but they were all the things i really wanted!!

Glad to hear your stuff has arrived ok...apart from the couple of mis-haps...can you claim on the insurance? You used Pickfords huh? How come it wasn't them at the uk end too?

HI YA!
yes we can claim on the insurance, but it the lamp was hand made in a tiny craft place in northamptonshire so it will be impossible to replace
Pickfords were the handlers at this end, think they are for most shipments (?) but pickfords were abou 3 grand more expensive at the uk end, you do the math

Nice to hear you got your stuff OK but shame about the lamp.

It makes life so much more comfortable to have your stuff eh!

We were reasonably lucky with a fractured dining chair but Iwas more concerned by certain items that never seemed to have "made it" to the container. Not much and not very valuable but irritating to lose.

No things like a new pair of trainers and a specialised stereo remote that looked like a small computer oh and Jack's remote control 4wd but we replaced that pretty quick plus a few other unrelated bits.

Pollyana

It's difficult to know where to point the finger. Did I put them somewhere stupid, unlikely since they would have come from different rooms. Like everyone who freights oeverseas, the goods were packed by one team, unloaded by another, checked by Customs and Quarantine and finally unloaded here by yet more guys.

For that reason, I can't say it was something underhand or simply a mistake somewhere but it sure seems off.

We used a firm with a strong reputation and everything else arrived in good nick. So I'm going to chalk it up to experience.

Serious point though, if you lose a lot of stuff who takes responsibility?

All this talk about lost and broken stuff is making me nervous as we are booking the container this week and don't know who to go with! We have had 4 quotes and all in about the same price range so who do you choose. We are going to look at the small print in abit more detail to see how they compare when things go wrong!!
Mind you we had to laugh today when we got the quote from one, ( I deal with shipping agents in the course of my job, and the local manager said he would get me a good deal !) They were the dearest of the lot even after asking us what our lowest quote had been. So much for its not what you know its who....
