Log burner for the winter without a doubt. But you'll need aircon for the summer

Already got ceiling fans. Need something for winter ! Do people find log burners a hassle ? We like them but wondered about reverse cycle 'cos the fans aren't enough sometimes in this humidty ! Is RC expensive to run ?

My electric bills in the rental (pretty small 3 bedder) were $450ish during the winter with the reverse aircon on (in one room only) and about $200ish during the spring without it on.
Wood costs us $210 per ton delivered and we bought 1 and half ton last year (but we used it contstantly for a good 12 - 14 weeks), this house is a lot bigger and it heats all of it up if we leave the doors open.

We've got both but only use the log burner in the winter as I find the R/C dries the air too much so it gets quite stuffy. For Qld winter we use about $130 worth per winter and I find I have mine on more often that Aussie friends! (But maybe my house is just cold as it's a Queenslander).

We had a log burner installed last April. It was a god send. There was hardly any mess putting it in.I have no hassle with it as my oh cleans and sorts it out.

All depends on where you live I suppose. We have a slow combustion stove for winter which is wonderful - it costs us very little because I have a scavenging husband with a chain saw. He has managed to collect us a couple of years worth of wood this year - mainly gum but he isnt proud and we have burned fence palings in the past. Only trouble is that you need a good wood pile so your garden has to be big enough to cope. I would love to have RC Aircon for summer but DH being the greenie he is, we just make do with a mobile evap cooler. We can get away with both in Canberra because our winters are nippy. Doubt you would need a slow combustion stove up in Qland but you would definitely need aircon.
If you dont have a husband who likes chopping wood - remember that it isnt just the split logs that you can buy, you also need the kindling stuff which can be a real PITA - then go with the easy option and get gas or electric heating.
