Have Visa, but potentially not going :-(

Just because someone has a mortgage of $300k doesn't mean that they bought the house for $300k.
(Incidentally, around my way you'd get a great house for $500k)

I dont think house prices/car prices are much worse than they were about 2 years ago. But the day to day stuff has really gone up.
I have just gone through away 3 months credit card statements after thinking Westpac had made some huge errors. Unfortunately they havent.
We use credit cards to pay food, bills, petrol, education health etc plus the odd takeout, wander round the shops etc. Anyway 3 months $19,267 No mortage payment or rent.
Apart from $3200 of airfares it was all household. Food was about $3100 but we also spend in markets etc so thats all cash on top. Book and subject levies for 2 kids in state high next year was $1539, 2 School shirts $90, 3 X health ins $813, $2958 on rates and water, $1326 rego and insurance for one car, One elec bill $663 for 89 days....... It just goes on and on.
Its not till you look through and really check the statements you realise just how much stuff has gone up We dont have some fancy lifestyle either, kids in state school, all healthy food, take out is twice a month, gave up restaurants ages ago, we do have private health cover but I wouldnt be without that, medicare wait lists are too long IME. Not much you can cut out in other words.

Average wage for Java in London is 60k, top 10% is over 85k - http://www.itjobswatch.co.uk/jobs/london/java.do
Sadly I don't have figures for anywhere in Aus but would expect Sydney and Melbourne wages to be similar.
Average wage for Java in Bristol (my daft example) is 30k, top 10% is over 45K http://www.itjobswatch.co.uk/jobs/bristol/java.do I'm guessing that the difference between financial IT jobs in Sydney and non-financial IT jobs in Perth would be similar to those between London and Bristol.

It's just a total misconception to think that visiting a foreign country as a tourist and finding it expensive therefore equates to a 'high cost of living' for residents of that country . . . all it really means is that the pound in the tourist's pocket has little buying power abroad . . .

A trip to the Opera House is cheaper than my council tax.

Agreed, it is a problem for first home buyers. Many people who buy in Australia have $200k+ deposits. A lot of equity floating around in existing homes. Of course the average home is out of reach of the first home buyer on an average salary, as I guess common sense dictates it would be.

People keep saying fruit is cheap. The only cheap fruit I found was watermelon. Grapefruits = $4.99/kilo. Olives=$20/kilo
Please don't tell me that this is cheap. Here in the UK you do not pay £1 for a grapefruit and as for olives costing $20/kilo

You could not be further from the truth. Perth has the lifestyle I want, great windsurfing and surfing. Just being practical. If it was just me then great, but a wife who does not work and 2 kids makes the situation a little more complicated

I have to say that I agree with you. I earn more than $90k and have a wife who doesn't work either and two teenage sons... and it's bloody difficult financially and seems to be getting harder and harder.
