Default Has anyone been to "Emigrate" show?

Has anyone been to an Emigrate show, there is one this weekend at Sandown Racecourse and as we are still at the very beginning of the whole process, thought it might be a useful place to pick up lots of info.
There is also another one, Australian Expo, (I think) in London later in March.
If anyone has been to either of these could you let me know if you thought they were worth a visit, we live in Somerset so a fair way to travel if they are not much good (nothing of course to small distance we are considering making!)
Ta very much

Hi Sammy,

In my opinion considering the distance i would say not to bother, but i'm sure many on here will say the opposite. I must say it did give us more confidence in our chances for applying. The show is basically all agents mainly for Australia and Canada, maybe a couple of shipping companies and job recruitment agents. You may spend 20-30 minutes queueing to speak to an agent for 10 minutes. Also their are seminars which can be handy for new starters, we didn't learn anything that we didn't learn from the BE site.
But it's an excuse to have a weekend away for yourselves!!

Hi Sammy,
We also live in Somerset and travelled to London last October. We stayed overnight and really enjoyed the whole weekend!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We spent hours in the Expo as we chatted to most of the stands, even the states that we had decided not to go to, as we wanted to hear what everyone had to offer!!!
I was jumped on pretty quickly a I am a nurse and the South Australia nursing stand wanted to interview me that weekend.
My husband, a bricklayer also found a few useful contacts, and to be honest we found it quite a good weekend.
Catch the Berries coach up on the Saturday early and you get an easy stressfree weekend away.
Let us know how you get on, Best Wishes, J and J

We went to the emigrate show at Sandown a couple of years ago. I would say that if you are completely at the start of the process and don't really know much about it then its well worthwhile. If you have already done some research and have a good idea of where you want to go then it might not be worth bothering as it is mainly just stands offering general info (rather than wanting to discuss your specific case).

yea we went to the London show this time last year and where very dissapointed! you have to pay £10.00 each cash on the door and it was prob about 20 stands that just gave general info. i understand DIAC sometimes do shows with employers and you have to register for them on their web site but at this one there were def not many employers there other than a few employment agencies. we were told to go armed with CV's to hand out but no-one was interested.

Do you have any info on the show on Wednesday? We only live about 40mins from Liverpool and I think it be a useful experience. We are currently about to get the ball rolling so today is the start of the process. I personally have found the BE community a very useful source of information and would truly recommend it.

Thanks for the feedback, I have started the ball rolling today through an agent based on feedback from BE (Brains pickled) It would of been interesting to go down and see what they had to say. If you do get any further info post it on the thread as others may be interested. Good Luck in the future.

Hi Sammy,

We are going to Sandown on Saturday - we went last year and found out lots of useful information. I would say it's worth going and speaking to lots of different people.

We also went to Expo Australia last year - we found that useful too but that's mainly a job expo.

I helped out a couple of years ago on a stall and had a blast. You do have to squeeze through the crowds a fair bit and it isn't a place to take kids as they soon get bored. You can pick up a fair bit of info from the state government stands but you have to ask them for the various DVD's etc they have hidden

If you go to the WA stand and meet a lovely man called Bruno tell him Sasha says hello and will miss the wine this year and then tap him up for his DVD as the WA one is pretty good. Also get the Tasmania DVD as that is worth it and it gave me an Aussie fix when I needed it

Thanks everyone.
Mixed opinions, I think we shall still go although we will have to take our children with us as no one to leave them with. So we might have to scoot around fairly quickly!
Lokin out of my window and seeing the weather is a good motivation as well!

We went to the expo in London a few years ago.

Just a few stands as already said mainly shipping co's, banking & a few companies.

My husband is in I.T. and there weren't any specific stands for his area. However, there were a few stands interested in the engineering/construction field and nursing.

Personally, I wouldn't bother unless you fancy a weekend away.Stay in one of the cheapy motel style hotels in Watford (Premier Lodge, Moat House, Travelodge, etc) and get the train from Watford Junction to Euston (20mins) and enjoy London.
