Re: Gratuity payment from the UK?
I was told this payment should be paid by the end of June but here we are still, and nothing. Anyhoo, if by midnight tonight the payment is still not into my account then it won't form part of this years tax return will it?

And because individual tax returns are done on a cash basis, if you receive some money today - 1 July 2011 - it goes into the tax return for the year ending 30 June 2012 :). |
Re: Gratuity payment from the UK?
So I finally got the gratuity payment, and even though I got taxed and NI'd on it, I got more than expected. So a few questions:
...should I be claiming back the tax or should I just leave it as is, so that I do not need to pay tax in Australia? ...can I claim back the NI I paid on it, if so, how? Thanks in advance folks, Jen |
Re: Gratuity payment from the UK?
not sure re the NI
but on your Oz tax return you can enter the amount and show that tax has already been paid on it. The Oz gov will tax you on the gross amount but then deduct the amount uk tax already paid off the bill. this means you effectively lose the amount the uk gov declared as your tax free allowance which sucks but nothing you can do about it legally. In effect if its your only uk income and below the uk threshold you still get the pleasure of paying Oz tax (assuming you are over the threshold here that is!) |
