It is not the country - some plonkers are plonkers anywhere.

I remember trying to smoke "monkey rope" (dried vines, basically) during my schooldays ... crazy days long past ...

Makes me think to, not many posters are there, ho hum never going to get a good cost comparrison without some input.

I thought drugs that were opiate based were produced legally in tasmania for export, also this legal ownership of plants seems pretty sketchy, it seems 2 plants in south australia is legal.

They do produce hemp in Tassie, but not for use as a drug so much for production of material for bags etc. The growing of it is strictly controlled, and all the fields I saw were surrounded by electric fences

Let's see what happens with this observation.

Please remember I am not comparing The UK and Australia. I am making observations about my trip about things which we have discussed on here before.

There is a lot of drug Taking in Australia.

I had meetings with a number of peole in the mental health field over the past few weeks.
Drugs are a major problem. They take up a lot of resources in healthcare. There is widespread drug taking in schools.

There are needle boxes in public toilets in even the smallest towns and also in other public places.

While we were there there was widespread debate about school expulsions for drug offences.
There is a lot of discussion about drug misuse in the newspapers.
The use of cocaine etc. among young professionls is similar to here.

In Adelaide the growing of Marijuana is tplerated although there are restrictions on the amount you can grow for personal use.

This is an Observation,NOT an attack on all things Australian.
It is worth some realistic discussion though.

apparently drugs are 'rife' in Colac (population 15,000 and a good 45mins from anywhere) and on Monday there was a murder on the same street where we were renting earlier in the year! :scared:  Other than that it's a really nice place. :D

I was at Uni in a city for 5 years, never saw or was offered any drugs. Far too square! Moved to a small seaside village (150 people) and got offered anything and everything from dope to heroin. Even found out how it was being moved about - illuminating! Didn't take anything as I've never felt the need or the point but all the other people we knew used it to control thier moods.

The entire village would have floated off given half a chance. We also go to the Lakes a lot and apparently Keswick etc have a very lively drug culture.

A specious argument as it turned out, and snobbish too: of course it turned out that many of the yobs actually *liked* listening to Wagner, Strauss etc, so we actually got MORE of them on the station. And many of the educated middle-class commuters hated having all that classicial stuff rammed down their ear-holes at 7am!

IEcstacy is £2-5 in the UK so easily affordable to kids, however in Australia I have heard that 1 tablet goes for up to $200, I'm pretty sure that at that price there are a lot more young people in the UK taking them on a regular basis than in Australia.

Just my opinion

Well that explains the tv program last night, "border patrol" it showed mail coming into the country and them x-raying it. There was a video tape and the x-ray woman decided it looked strange, out came the screwdrivers and out popped 11 ecstacy tabs, if it sells for that amount I am not suprised they hid it in a video tape. Makes me wonder how much gets through though, there was also a package from the Uk, live plants complete with earthworms, had to be a practical joke!!

Chaps

Drugs are a problem wherever you venture these days  Here in Naples there are certain beaches you do not go onto due to the discarded syringes lying around. Same goes for certain parks etc. At the British school here they are regularly found in the immediate surrounds, mainly discarded by locals we are lead to believe

I think, as a parent of a 5 and 1 year old, that we must educate our children as they grow up as to the horrors and despair of drug use and the consequences of 'dabbling'. Its something I will worry about as they grow older. I remember (just about!) when I was a kid my mum being paranoid about the dangers of smoking, even though she smoked herself. She constantly banged it into me and my 2 brothers not to smoke and the consequences if we did. None of us have ever smoked. :)

Perhaps I'll be in a for a shock or two in a few years but we'll do our utmost to keep them away from it.
