Yes you are right, it's what makes you.
Yeah, you learn to work out that often those who are the most helpful immediately are not the true friends and those who can't talk to you easily are the best friends of all. I think the same goes with emigrating - the best friends can't deal with it and shut it (and you) out, loose friends can stay in touch easily then others don't care either way. It is not until called upon that you really know who you are dealing with.
