I would say that they are offering you the bottom end of the salary scale. I am actually doing a comparison in the construction industry at the moment, and that is very low. Bearing in mind there is a huge shortage over here for skilled people (and I mean huge- what sector you in?). The relocation package is low. Are they paying accom, hire car etc on top of this? They have also got you on a 6mth probationary period, is this tied into anything else in your contract?

The market rate for a structural engineer in Australia ranges from $45,000 - $135,000 depending on experience and the location of the job.

Also six months probation is unusual, but perhaps that to do with the sponsorship process.

I know of a civil guy (transport), offered $120K plus relocation costs from UK and four weeks accomadation costs upon arrival (no visa as he's an ozzie) in Brisbane, similar amount of experience. PM me for details.
$120k??? That's a huge difference!!! I pressume he probably got more experience than me???

I'm relocating to Melbourne.

Is this low? Bottom end? I'm structural engineer relocating to Melbourne. 4 years experience in buildings and 1 year in bridges.

I haven't got any OZ experience tho... Only relocation fees, no hired car, but 2 flight tickets and 2 weeks accommodation included when I arrived. Does this considered a good relocation package then?

Probation of 6 months is for me to familiarise myself with the oz standards before promoting.

I would more than double your relocation package, and accomodation allowance. For a general salary guide have a look at http://au.hudson.com/node.asp?kwd=salary-guides

I would seriously review your package try a few other big construction companies and see what they come back with... Also rail people are demanding a lot more than people with no rail experience.

To OP: You'll get a lot more that $4,500 pe rmonth once you add in LAFHA. For a single guy in Melbourne LAFHA would be around $29,300 per year. Have a look here: http://www.payme.com.au/living-away-...nce-lafha.html

Scroll down for the LAFHA allowances. LAFHA reduces your taxable salary, i.e. you end up with a considerably higher net salary. If your LAFHA was $29,300 your annual tax bill would only be $8,310.

Thanks for your reply!

So I pressume the employer will calculate the amount of LAFHA for me as a single person?

I would certainly expect a structural engineer in Perth, even with 5 years experience, to be earning more than $75K a year.

I would start looking at the jobs in WA in your area, I would think you could improve on that easily.

Basic salary incl superannuation $75000. I think the contribution for it is 9% hence I will get $68250. 20 days annual leave, medicare and life insurance paid for. Probational period of 6 month. $2000 relocation fees, 2 flight tickets.

I will be getting LAFHA but I have no idea what figure I'm looking at per month. I'm trying to work out how much income per week after tax I will be getting but it seems too complicated to work out.

Can someone contribute some idea pleaseeeeee? Or perhaps give me some break down figure?

Thank you soooo much!!!

As a few others have said, $75K doesn't sound much for that sort of role in the current Australian market. Admittedly I am in Perth where there is a huge boom but I would have thought you could nearly double that here. Even if you are set on Melbourne, the willingness of people to follow the $ should mean a lot more than that.

Be wary of recruitment agencies. One tried to tell me I was only worth $60K before I had my visa but I found my own job once here and started on $80K and quickly improved markedly on that.

Yes a huge difference and no more experience than yourself.

Don't get too hung up on relocation packages as a single person. Looking at what they're currently offering you, they've taken all the costs of relocating you off your salary, and then some.
