You should get out even more MP. There are entire clubs, filled with people getting out more, devoted to proving everything happens all the time in some areas more than others. Just because you haven't seen them doesn't mean they are better or worse than any other getting out more club in any other city in the developed world today. Love you. :)

Thanks for the replies
As I'm in construction and my wife is a nurse, were favouring Brisbane but one of the coastal sububurbs for the kids
Is it possible to live by the sea , but be close enough to commute to the city?
I'm conscious that we will have to be quite close to the city to get a chance with the jobs
Were used to travelling up to 45min in the UK, so I'm looking for a Coastal Brisbane suburb within this time distance, that's good for Kids
Many thanks
Jason

Hi Jason

You don't need to be near the city for construction or nursing. Check out the hospital locations, and as I said in the other thread there seems to be building work going on all over the place.

We`re just north of Upper Coomera, in Ormeau. Area is growing fast or atleast there is much on the cards when the economy picks up!. I visited Melbourne in `89. I know its a different place now but I was not that attracted to it when it came to move to Australia. My commute to the South west subs of Brizzy takes about an hour, And I can see a time when I will want something closer to home. I would rather stay in this area. Goldcoast Hospital is expanding I think or was pre budget!. And construction is picking up all along the coast. I`m here for my health and a better environment for my two young lads.

I live on the Gold Coast and work in contruction in Brisbane. I leave for work at 4.45am and get to work in approximately an hour every day. Finish at 4.00pm and it takes approximately 1 hour 15 minutes to get home.
I personally dont mind the commute as I get to live near the beaches and the lifestyle suits us.
In 4 years I have never stepped on a syringe or seen a drug deal going down, I have not been mugged or robbed, threatened or felt intimidated by anyone.
Yes Surfers is down the road with plenty of clubs with youngsters going a bit wild but if you dont actually venture into Surfers at the weekend you would not even know it was there. The Gold Coast is huge and takes almost an hour to drive from the northern tip to the southern tip but it only takes 5 minutes to drive through Surfers.

Construction work is not massive at the moment on the coast but if you are good enough and get your foot in the door with someone work is ok, hospital wise it seems as though there are plenty of jobs. There is currently the biggest job in Queensland on the coast building a huge hospital so there will be plenty of jobs coming up.

I have a 22 year old and a 5 year old son and I think the Gold Coast offers them an enriched environment.

Good luck with everything, I personally think its worth the hard work and inevitable rough times.

I originally looked at Melbourne, but I didn't think it offered why were moving to Australia , although there is a great deal of work there for construction project managers, we may have to go there
The beaches / suburbs we've looked at , coomera , hope island etc were the obvious areas, but I'm glad im on this forum as your giving us more choices
Really, I'm looking to live by a beach, that's safe fort kids and has good amenities , that's our scope really
I've been traveling around the UK for 20 years in the construction industry working anything from 70-120 hours a week, so if I'm told I have to travel an hour each way and finish at 4pm, I'll be happy
Anything else you can throw to us would be appreciated, especially a construction recruitment agency that's based on the gold coast ?
Many thanks

Is there a 'real' beach closer to Coomera than Southport?

If you have a boat or are a good swimmer then straddie is probably closest.

and depends what you mean by "real" beach. Loads of places have a sandy bit on the river. see Phil Hill Envorinmental Park near Hope Island for example.

If you want a proper beach with waves (Pacific Ocean) then main beach/the spit near Southport is it.

Southport doesn't have a beach, not in the real Gold Coast sense anyway. As the crow flies, Main Beach is the closest but it's about a 25 minute drive.

spot on
http://maps.google.com.au/maps?f=q&s...,0.154324&z=13

never seen the attraction of living on the beach to be honest
its way overpriced and the properties are usually ( unless you spend in the millions ) smaller than average

You also get the added expense of external upkeep from the salt, sand etc and 'commoners' wandering past your property trying to peer in and that doesn't take into consideration the irritation of finding the council want to take back some of the beach you've nicked as your own personal garden and horror of horrors want to build a beachwalk on it.

Re: Gold coast

Thanks everyone, we've seen some great areas , burleigh heads , hope island which is the Australia we've all dreamed of, but unfortunately according to the construction recruitment agencies, the work situation for construction project managers on the Gold coast is quiet compared to Brisbane etc

Therefore, my future employees have suggested moving to somewhere like redland which I believe is closer to the CBD

Jason

You`ll be half hour closer to Sunshine Coast to, best of both worlds.

Redland is a nice place, it is closer in distance, but not loads better time wise. We looked at a few houses there. Public transport was not as good as gold coast, and options for driving were up towards Cleveland then head west to the city, these roads seemed chocka in peak times... having said that the M1 is chocka too...
