Well as usual this thread has lost the plot!
to bring it back a little, my husband has persuaded me to go for a fact finding mission to oz "alone!" for 3 weeks in September, he says he will stay home with the kids, and as he is driving through europe in august for 2 weeks, he thinks i should go, he insists! well i did put up agood fight not to go, but sadley i lost;) seriously though, because of our recent doubts (thanks to this site!), it makes sense. i have decided to fly to perth (stay with sister in law for a week, then fly to ACT (to hubbies cousin), then down to adelaide and melbourne. we just need to know where the best place for jobs are in our area of work,(he's a college lecturer, i am a social worker) any one got any sensible ideas, to help me out? cheers ellen |

Re: going off the idea!
Go to the Australian shop in Covernt Garden, London. Buy some VB and scrummy food and see what you would be missing if you didn't go to Oz.
Originally posted by ellen1 maybe its a combination of things, maybe its because i'm exhausted after just completing a thesis, maybe its the lovley summers day we have just had, maybe its the negative posts on this site, maybe its old age (38), maybe finding out how hard it is to get a job in perth (the place of my dreams) or maybe i have just become disolusioned with the whole thing! who knows and most probaly nobody cares! as my granny says, "sleep on it and things will look different in the morning" ellen:confused: |
Originally posted by Wilf Total waste of time and money. As Badger would say, let me tell you what will happen. You will love it. All holiday romances are like that. Don't emigrate. I admit that perhaps a third of my time was a 'holiday', but as I've said all along, my own personal bottom line is that i'd rather be mortaged, bored, a mite put out etc, depressed, looking for jobs WHATEVER in a country like Australia than the UK, where the pace of life is faster, simple entertainment costs more, people smile less, and the weather is poorer, and is more geared to professionals/ 3 bed semi types as aposed to migrants/developers/'risk takers'. I mean, with 2 arms and 2 legs and transport I will always feed and clothe myself in Aus - I couldn't do the same in the UK. For me it is QED. For me. Could be different for someone else. I have already given my views on the sorts of migrant types who are likely to have a rougher time of it. cheers badgers |

I have been in Oz a long time and it is changing. You are going to have to accept that too. Look at this thing with Tim Tams. They are chocolate biscuits. If someone misses marmite you say they are not the type to make it, but you encourage this obsession with australian biscuits. Yet you espouse the "when in rome" ethos. It is inconsistent. You are the most likely to enjoy oz yes, but enjoy the UK too. By the way, when I left, Twickenham was in Middlesex, not south London. South London stopped at Roehampton and Puntey. Is it bigger now? |

Well said!
Just been reading through all these posts, particularly about Perth, where we are planning to go.
We lived there for a year in 1995/6 and returned for the millennium for 3 months. Always had a great time. Things do settle down wherever you go and it's easy to get stuck in a rut. You either get out there and do something or sit at home moaning (or go to the pub - works for us!) Regards Pookin |

A more materialistic people you could not wish to meet , as for risk takers , the question begs where, in the suburbian waste lands ? :D   :D   |

Yes it will give you some sort of an idea for yourself, and no three weeks is not really long enough for you to really know if Aus will be for you in the long run... but who's got a year or more for a holiday?? There's only one way you're going to find out if you and your family like it here and that is to live here for a while - you could absolutely love it, or hate it. Nobody can predict this for you. It took me about a year and a half to realise Aus is not for me for the long-term future. Actually it was about the time I moved to Brisbane, I first lived in Newcastle NSW (for over a year) which I did like, maybe I would have got fed up of living there too had I stayed there... who knows. But I do think it may be a good idea for you to have a look even though it is hard to get a real idea of any place in just three weeks cheers:) |

I have had my doubts, especially when I have read posts that have been very negative, or I would get wound up by what was being said. I then stopped reading the negative posts for a while, and waited for our visas. I read the posts now, if I feel like it, but try not to get involved as before. I know why we are going, I know what we want, I know what we will miss, I know that the garden isn't going to be all Rosey, but I am going to give it a try. If it doesn't work then it isn't for the want of trying, but at least when I am old (I am 44 now) I can say that I went, tried it, but it wasn't for me. If you hadn't ever found this forum, I am sure that you would of had your doubts anyway, because I know that I have and still would have. Good luck, whatever your decision, but if you go, I will see you in Perth. Keep in touch on this forum and let me know how you are getting on. One last piece of advice. Read the posts Take in any information that is useful to your needs Run over the negatives - Do they apply to you? Most of the time it is useless information - occasionally there is something to keep in the back of your mind. Eg How fat people are in Oz and the price of Marmite!!!!!! HAHA Then go and find out for yourself, thats what we are going to do. Sue C |
Hi sue
thanks so much for your reply, you are right about what you said, especially the bit about not really knowing till you try. i am 38 my hubbies 41, this may be our only chance, and i can't live with, "i wonder ifs". so were going to do it! when are you going? and what are your professions, have you got kids? and where abouts in Perth are you going? sorry for all the questions, but who knows we may meet up when we get there! take care and thanks again. ellen |
