going off the idea!

maybe its a combination of things, maybe its because i'm exhausted after just completing a thesis, maybe its the lovley summers day we have just had, maybe its the negative posts on this site, maybe its old age (38), maybe finding out how hard it is to get a job in perth (the place of my dreams) or maybe i have just become disolusioned with the whole thing!
who knows and most probaly nobody cares!
as my granny says, "sleep on it and things will look different in the morning"

You have to narrow a view on where to go in Australia in fact the world , Perth is a hick city set in the middle of nowhere .
The rest of Australia looks down at WA , but if you think your life would be so perfect in Perth go for it .

You would do well in the ACT its full of goverment funded jobs , but its not what you are looking for .
Try the big city ,Sydney its not a cheap place to live , but it has the best wages in Australia and many jobs .
Then retire either in QLD or WA , after you have earned enough capital to settle down.

They call them Public service appointments same as the British Civil Service , most are created just to make kingdoms for people to eat public money .
The ACT is the hub of Federial Goverment , any other country would have made Sydney its Capital not here .
ACT is famous for goverment jobs and Australias Porn industry , the one place its legal to make and sell porn flims.
Well my pads still up for sale in the CBD in Joondalup so hurry over , swamp views near what passes as the cafe strip and national parkland.
2 storie town house 3 bedrooms , 2.5 bathrooms, very cheap.

going off the idea

Snap ellen I seem to feel the same.

Got back from Perth with my hubby 3 weeks ago and now feel even more confused!

Yes I think Australia seems a great place - I'm not sure about Perth though it seemed dare I say it, a bit dull. So much so that we changed our flight and flew back 6 days early!! BUT that could be that the realism of how hard it is to get here just gave us the hump and we thought whats the point of being here, lets just get back home and forget it. In an ideal situation my husband would love to get a job before we arrive but of course with 98% of the employers out their not being interested in you until you have permanent residency that seems highly unlikely. I just feel completely fed-up with it all. Some days its 'yeh lets go for it' another day I think 'no its too risque'. We do have a good life style here and earn really well - I'm sure its a case of the big unknown - I wish I had a crystal ball!

What will make you decision to go or stay - I can't answer that question but perhaps you could?

c ya

er..um....if Perth felt dull, then why didn't you consider Sydney, Melbourne or Brisbane?

ellen1 May 31st 2003 11:42 pm

hi GG,
thanks for reply,
we are still confused, but because we havn't even started the process yet, we are going to look into other places, this site has really put us off perth! so we are going to look at adelaide or even melborne, we have relies in Camberra (who are going to sponsor us) but that dosn't appeal much (weather too much like uk!). sister in law migrates in 2 weeks to perth, so we will see how she settles (she's a nurse) so we won't completley give up on perth yet! and the end of the day, contary to what some people on this site may think( pb etc) getting jobs is no 1 important for us, i am a social worker, hubby is a college lecturer, so we may have to settle where ever the best prospects are.

cheers ellen

All good news?

Buying a house is still well within the means of most Britons, despite three years of double-digit property price growth, according to new research.
Mortgage lender Cheltenham & Gloucester (C&G) said low interest rates meant that mortgage repayments still accounted for a relatively low proportion of take-home pay.

The company said homeowners spend on average 33.4% of their income on mortgage repayments, down sharply from 71.3% at the height of the last house price boom in 1990.

Meanwhile, homeowners who split the cost by buying as a couple spend just 18.8% of their pay on housing costs, compared with 33% in 1990.

Well as usual this thread has lost the plot!

to bring it back a little, my husband has persuaded me to go for a fact finding mission to oz "alone!" for 3 weeks in September, he says he will stay home with the kids, and as he is driving through europe in august for 2 weeks, he thinks i should go, he insists!
well i did put up agood fight not to go, but sadley i lost;)

seriously though, because of our recent doubts (thanks to this site!), it makes sense. i have decided to fly to perth (stay with sister in law for a week, then fly to ACT (to hubbies cousin), then down to adelaide and melbourne. we just need to know where the best place for jobs are in our area of work,(he's a college lecturer, i am a social worker) any one got any sensible ideas, to help me out?

cheers

Total waste of time and money. As Badger would say, let me tell you what will happen. You will love it. All holiday romances are like that.

Don't emigrate.

Go to the Australian shop in Covernt Garden, London. Buy some VB and scrummy food and see what you would be missing if you didn't go to Oz.

i'd say 3 weeks is too short. You need months to really get in to it, find out the real aus.

I admit that perhaps a third of my time was a 'holiday', but as I've said all along, my own personal bottom line is that i'd rather be mortaged, bored, a mite put out etc, depressed, looking for jobs WHATEVER in a country like Australia than the UK, where the pace of life is faster, simple entertainment costs more, people smile less, and the weather is poorer, and is more geared to professionals/ 3 bed semi types as aposed to migrants/developers/'risk takers'. I mean, with 2 arms and 2 legs and transport I will always feed and clothe myself in Aus - I couldn't do the same in the UK. For me it is QED. For me. Could be different for someone else.

I have already given my views on the sorts of migrant types who are likely to have a rougher time of it.

cheers

Some of what you have said in the past I can agree with. Some not.

You seem a bit over keen to me. I have been in Oz a long time and it is changing. You are going to have to accept that too.

Look at this thing with Tim Tams. They are chocolate biscuits. If someone misses marmite you say they are not the type to make it, but you encourage this obsession with australian biscuits. Yet you espouse the "when in rome" ethos. It is inconsistent.
You are the most likely to enjoy oz yes, but enjoy the UK too.
By the way, when I left, Twickenham was in Middlesex, not south London. South London stopped at Roehampton and Puntey. Is it bigger now?

I'm sorry to hear that you are having doubts because of this site. Don't let other people put you off. It just didn't work for them; it doesn't mean that it won't work for you.

Enjoy your trip. Hope it puts your mind to rest.
