Gladstone experiences?

Gladstone experiences?
Hello folks, first time poster so be nice 
I am a guy in my early 20s from Scotland, fresh out of uni, sitting with a contract from a company with an office in Gladstone. The idea would be that I spend a year there before moving to a bigger office in one of the main cities.
From a bit of googling I see mainly bad news about the place so I'm wondering if anyone can say something good about it! I see that there are a few local sports clubs that I could get involved with, and the marina looks interesting. It seems that nightlife is near-non-existent which is a blow but by no means a deal breaker.
What are your experiences of the place?
