Highway 1 is an unsealed road through about 700km of pretty remote country in the Gulf of Carpentaria region:

I’m going to be doing this in a campervan!

It's just that I have two kids 12 and 10. So comfort between journeys seemed important. I figure they could do some studying around the table between stops. I wasn't going to do any off-roading or anything like that.

anyone got any views about campervan V caravan? The idea of having the kids squashed up in a 4x4 car between stops seemed cruel! But then I have never done anything like this before, so don’t know what would be the best option.

I should be in Perth between April and May. So we will be heading out from there. Not sure to go over the top or under the bottom yet.

Also I was looking a completing it in 3 months.

Might bump in to you on the way around...

by the way forgot to log the misses off, submainman posting realy..

Sorry Ems.

Hi all!

It's interesting to see the different ways people have done or plan to do this. Maria and me started in Sydney in December not knowing where we would go. I bought a decent campervan - an old Nissan Urvan - with a view to travelling up the east coast. After we'd spoken to an intrepid Dutch couple we decided that that was lame and we should go around the whole country. So we set off south from Sydney and ended up back in Sydney the following July after going all the way around. Best thing we've ever done!

Basic requirements for the trip were, comfortable bed, dual-fuel (LPG + Petrol), big water tank (and a hose for filling up) and some utensils, tools and spares.

For those 7 months we spent every night in the campervan. We used a proper campsite every few days for a shower and to do some washing. In between we would wash wherever we could. We stayed on one particular beach in WA for 5 weeks!! Catching and eating fish all the time, reading books...

We stuck mostly to the sealed roads but quite often had stretches of unsealed, rutted roads to deal with - not a problem though when you get a good speed up. And just awesome to spend endless days cruising through deserts in the west and north.

Out of interest how/where did you buy your campervan? Was it private or from a dealer? Was looking at price of used cars online whilst having a 'quiet' period at work! I think we'd be looking to pick up a Toyota LandCruiser or similar (although I found a site today selling Land Rover Freelanders at much cheapness!), packing a tent and trying to stay in cabins and the like.

I bought it privately off an old couple in Nowra that I found in the Trading Post. Basically got the train there and then drove it back to Sydney. It cost around $7000.

Tx for the tips,

I have to get a four birth so it will be a bit bigger. Do you think it would be ok on those un-sealed road?

Also how important is it for that (LPG + Petrol) requirement?

7 months ! wow.....

thx again...

hi we have just completed the loop in the last 2 weeks and it took us 9 months in total and 32000km, we only had a mazda campervan ( 1989 ), it was the best thing we have ever done.

left cairns in 1st june and went anti clockwise

you don`t have to woory about fuel stops as they are every 250km and yes fuel is more expensive away from major areas.

it cost us about £ 22000 including purchase of the van and staying in campsites most of the time ( big 4 and top tourist sites ) you can still see alot with a 2wd and if you want more you can hire 4wd to get to the bungles, kakadu etc. its the best money we have ever spent

the best places were exmouth and broome and nt, abbo`s are that much of a problem just anoying, always by beer in big towns as it bloody expensive where they live !!!!!!!!!!!and try to avoid staying in their townships and never stop for them, i know it sounds harsh but you don`t want to meet a drunken one!!!!!!!!!

you learn so much about the country and meet loads of great poeple, we now have many friends around oz and speak regularly to them still

good luck and hope you all enjoy it as much as we did

( drop toilets are an experiance or take a shovel )
