Hi there.
Myself and my best friend are arriving in Australia at the begining of April, and will be looking to get a rental property in Manly, Sydney for a year. I am 26 and she is 27, and I am currently employed as a senior psychiatric nurse. We are completely new to this and don't have any idea how to get started. Looking on-line at some of the rental properties available it seems that they are really expensive! Are we looking in the wrong places, or do the wages there reflect the price of accomodation? Can anyone point us in the right direction and relieve some of our anxieties about cost?!!

Hi, rentals in that area are expensive unfortunately. What sites are you looking at? The biggest two in Australia are realestate.com.au and domain.com.au
Hope that helps

That's great, thanks. I will have a look at those now. Is Manly one of the most expensive areas? We are pretty flexible about where we go; could you reccomend any cheaper areas that are close to the beach and nice within Sydney? We would like to be fairly central and near to transport as neither of us will be driving initially, and we are reluctant to be anywhere too suburbian.. Thank you!

It really depends on what you're looking for.....If you're looking for a place that is fully furnished, they are more expensive. Most places on Domain.com or realestate.com aren't furnished, so you would have to buy your own furniture, white goods etc.
If you are in the market for a fully furnished place, Sydney Gumtree is a good place to start looking:
Sydney Gumtree
It has a variety of different accommodation advertised, including shared accommodation, which might be useful if you're looking for a less expensive option.
Good luck!

Cremorne Point is really nice. Like Manly it is serviced by bus and ferry but closer to Sydney.
