Getting cooler <g>

Today saw the coldest April day ever in Australia - minus 13'.

Had to go down to Canberra this morning and you can see the first snows on the hills to the South of the city.

Winter's not far away!

Yeah, but not as much as the "I can't believe how much it can rain in a single day" ones we get from Darwin in the other 6 months... :)

They are almost as good as the ' why can't I water my lawn, wash my car, why should we have to drink desalinated water, my house has no insulation, where can I buy a decent heater from ' ....etc .
Its actually been a below average wet season this year in Darwin. Been very little ran March/April. Noticeably a large drop in humidity the last week as well. Makes working outside and not being able to smell your own sweat after 5 mins wonderful. :D

 We rarely get any thread about Darwin, let alone a moaning one about rain

My eldest has just got back from watching the boyfriend playing footie, she's in fleecy pj bottoms, t shirt, cardigan and boyfriends fleece huddled in bed under the duvet and is still frozen

Was it Errol Flynn who once said ' give me warm and moist every time before cold and dry' ? Or did I here that on some dodgy internet movie site recently?. ;)

It's gone darn cold down here south of the border. What was that line from Only Fools and Horses - something like "I just seen a couple of brass monkeys outside crying their eyes out."

Interesting - I was the OP and didn't complain (whinge) about the cold - just put the record on -hmm - record!

One of thereasons we settled here is because there are seasons - often four before lunch - and the humidity is low all year round. The trees are now at their best - reds, oranges and copper colours all over. It was even better in Canberra.

What one *could* legitimately complain about is the almost total lack of insulation in the houses - great gaps under outside doors, no loft insulation, no wall insulation etc. The locals seem to get used to it - you see them walking around in shorts and T shirts in 5' temperatures with a wind chill of -15'!

Re: Getting cooler <g>

I noticed more people in trousers, rather than shorts, yesterday.

So the cold has definately hit our area... Looks like we are dropping down to a maximum of 23°C on some days this week.

My wife was digging the quilts out last night. And I now need to find my socks and trousers, I haven't seen them since September.

Temperatures plunge below 3C across Melbourne this morning

MELBOURNE has shivered through its coldest April morning in over 50 years, with temperatures dropping below freezing in some suburbs.

Melbourne recorded a low of 2.9C just before 7am, the equal lowest April minimum temperature since 1957, while a number of suburbs had temperatures of between 0C and 2C.

........

Melbourne set another record yesterday when it recorded four days in a row below 15C for the first time since 1949.

Oh stop yer moaning. Here in NZ we've had a few unseasonable days in the 20s, which was great, but tomorrow we're back in business with a low of 0 and a high of 8.

Cooler

Errol was from Tas, where it may well be cold (1c this morning when I left work at 7.30am!) but it's not wet, Hobart is the driest capital in Oz, along with Adelaide.

Beautiful here today, cold, crisp, clear blue sky, sunshine, snow on the moutain - perfect (well, it would be if we had double glazing and decent heating ;) )

But it's only about 12 weeks since Melbourne recorded it's hottest ever recorded temperature at 46.4C and it's hottest ever consecutive 3 days.

Global confusion?

yes had a sudden change up here, really feeling the cold this week 2c the other morning the windscreen was frozen up! absolutely peeing it down here at the mo.

on a positive side the sunrise in winter just seems so magical, beautiful orange skies and could see all the islands as clear as this morning. Plus I love winter clothes, log fires, a few glasses of pinot and bangers & mash cant beat it

I can count on one hand the amount of rain we have had in perth in the last 6months. :) (not a good thing btw)

The strange thing is, perth actually gets more rain over the year than manchester, can you believe that.

Thing is here we get all our rain in pretty much 3 months of the year jun july aug.

you mean in winter? same here really, it really is not the wet hole many people think. Tasmania has been suffering a drought for the last couple of years and we have had some terrible bushfires.

earlier on it threw it down now its blue sky and sunshine, its unpredictable :)

First time in 4 years or so in Melbourne I have had to de-ice the windscreen with warm water. What we have got a few times a year is that slush which the windscreen wipers can deal with.

In the Uk the warm water routine was often daily.

It was only in winter! I can't actually for the life of me remember how long it went on for. But certainly more than once in 4 years.....There are lots of memories like that fading fast...
