Unlike London, where any water you drink has been through the system of x number of people before you (cleaned of course) this is not the case in Oz.

Pandy, the water in cities & towns in Australia is fine to drink. As Kirsty said, some is more chlorinated than others & some has flouride added (Brisbane doesnt), but its all clean enough to drink without boiling or further treatment.
Having said that, we have a water filter as the chlorine etc in the water tastes , tastes alot better filtered & chilled than straight out of the tap .
There was a problem a few years back with Sydney water (some sort of poisonous algae from memory?), but they got it under control & I dont think there is any risk now.

We drink tap water, but put it in the fridge for a few hours first to keep it cool.
We use empty Cottees cordial bottles to keep the water in, Nice size for the fridge door.

Actually I think chilling water in the fridge causes chlorine to evaporate so if anyone is only concerned with that then they need no filter.
