This will be our first time to experience the run-up to an election in Australia. Can't vote, of course, so will have to just sit back and take the consequences. Hopefully not higher interest rates etc etc.

Maybe. Just as long as it's not allowed to get out of hand - due to poor handling of the economy.

Yep. Both parties have over promised on the spending.

Have they? I haven't really heard much on this bar the news that Labor's promises haven't been costed (most notably the KPMG backflip, talk about honesty Mr. Latham ;) )

As sydneybrit points out, interest rates probably will go up regardless of government - it's been on the cards for a long time and will depend mostly on the world economy. Our future government will determine how much they will go up.

A government spending more than it taxes attracts a higher rate of interest. I think it was access economics that predicted both parties had over promised. All I can predict is that both parties will backflip on policies that have recently been announced.

First time on this forum just wondered what both parties position on Immigration will be. We are in the process of waiting for TRA result and hope to have Skilled Ind application in before Oct 9th. Whether anyone knows the Labour position if it looks like they will get in. If it's anything like Labour here then the floodgates will open !!

Both the UK and Australia are signatories to the same treaties regarding assylum. Both treat assylum seekers similiarly ie they lock up those at risk.

Britain is just more geographically accessible.

Here Labour's main "light on" assylum policy is to not lock up children and to divert immigrants into the Bush. The liberals have jumped on to the policy hence the SIR visa.

I love it today when Mark Latham was talking about not raising taxes but would impose a 1% Levy to pay for something (which i cannot recall right now) and when asked whats the differance he answered, "um i dont know, what are you trying to get at" Oh thats the PM i want to have.... NOT

It's not a tax, it's a levy :p I preferred his denial to John Laws, then his press conference to declard it was policy from 2003 that they still stand by 'but not a tax'.

Yes, this has to be one of the most unprofessional, underqualified, underexperienced persons ever to run for the job of running a Country :scared: How the hell we even managed to elevate him to Candidate is beyond me, the man is an embarrasment to us. However Sky news Poll this morning has him in the lead. How over 50% of the country intend to vote for an imbercile is worrying. My guess is his promise of Tax cuts for low income earners, the majority of this country fall into the Low income category, so maybe thats it. Claims are The howard government ignored low income earners, which I cannot understand, given they got $600 per child now and another $600 later, ending up with many thousands of tax free dollars for most families, plus tax cuts in the previous budget.

I cannot imagine where this country will end up under the leadership  of Mark Latham.
