If you can - try and avoid a general anaesthetic. Putting them to sleep can be a nightmare - my eldest had it done last year. She has a phobia of needles. They couldn't find the vein and she starting stressing,so they gave her gas. When she came too - she didn't recognise us for a couple of hours which seriously freaked me out, plus she got herself into such a state it was very upsetting.

Personally, if my child was having a GA I would want it done in a proper hospital with resuscitation facilities etc. A GA carries an albeit small but nevertheless real risk of life-threatening complications - you don't really want something to go wrong in a dentists chair with the nearest ambulance 10/20 mins away.

A co-operative 4 year old does not need a GA for a couple of fillings provided the dentist has painfree techniques for administering the LA, explains everything in appropriate terms and gives the child control...i.e. a raised hand stop signal.

If you do go for GA though - don't worry, if done competently it is atraumatic...one of my kids had GA at 9 months old and was bright as a button an hour later to our amazement.

There'd be no after-trauma of blood with fillings either whichever method used.
Good luck.

My little girl has had probably 20 or so - shes 5 - first was at 18 months. she had one on wednesday and one on thursday about 6 weeks ago, they said it was fine to do that. for something like fillings it will be pretty mild I guess. the ones less than about 1 hour seem to be fine for us and its not that much of a drama, they always drip the kids so they have fluids

I have always been in a hospital but I think the dental hospitals dealing wiht paediatric patients will be well set up

I wouldnt have any issues but anaesthetics are always a worry just because there are side effects, that are rare but side effects never the less

good luck for her. I always take melon and some nice food for when she wakes up ravenous. they always give us ham sandwiches and cheap juice which she hates. Also warm socks because the air con is sometimes up really high

She gives her sister and brother anaesthetic regularly and I have to save them by taking hte bag off their faces......
