Default Gambling in Australia

Has anyone else noticed the huge amount of gambling machines in any pub you walk into in Australia? Worse in an Australian RSL club, just rows and rows of machines with pensioners losing grandkid's inheritances. Anyone have any experience of using them?

Thank God we don't have "pokies" in WA.

I think it will come though, too much money to be made and like Sunday trading it's all about "choice" isn't it

Grandkids' inheritence? My grandkids will be entitled to exactly what I got from my Grandparents...their unconditional love while they were alive and some fond memories now they're dead.

If the old pensioners want to go play the machines then good on them for having something to do rather than just sit waiting to die.

Well Said

Since when does older peoples money become their childrens (or grand childrens) inheritence. I do believe it is for the spending of the person(s) who earned it.

That aside, I do think Pokies are a terrible thing. They only benifit the actual owners and government of the day. Absolutely loads of cash to be made but not by the punter.

Get rid of the lot is what I say.

gambling is a problem here.
Every now and then the govt run a series of ads for gambling helpline. The average Aussie spends some phenomenal amount on gambling per year- like 50,000 (I don't gamble, so someone is using my share!).

The Crown Casino in Melbourne was temporarily located in a hotel- the huge 4 block complex was built with 3 years of profits in its former temp home!

Pokies are the single worst thing about pubs in Sydney. Well, them and Tooheys New. Oh and TAB. Actually, most pubs in Sydney are shite. Many of them are like having a pint in a William Hill or Ladbrokes, with a bit of Blackpool pleasure beach thrown in for good measure.

Luckily we have managed to find a couple that don't feel like this! Phew!

Read a statistic somwhere, and if I remember correctly compared to the UK, twice as much is gambled annually; not twice as much per head, but twice as much population against population, which is an enormous amount.

So you want to leave your Grandkids smiles and happiness as they join the dole lines, thats nice.

I do agree with pensioners doing something. But sitting in front of a machine waiting for the 10 cents they put in to become five dollars inst in my opinion living life.

Why on earth would they be on the dole? I had no inheritence and neither did my husband and no dole for us?
