FX £ - $ AUD This week

Does anyone know of a site where you can check the pattern for the GPB / AUD exchange rate over the last 12 months please?

Right back down at $2.10 now.
Seems like the scale of the problems facing the UK banking sector are taking their toll as the A$ is down against all the other major currencies but up against the pound.

its just crazy at the the mo
who would have thought the way it was climbing last week that today it would be down 10cents in 7 days???
all the finacial reports and analysists were all predicting the £ to rally and saying it is bullish and then just one friday afternoon of bad share prices for Lloyds bank ruins it all.
Government meetings over weekend further worry it then RBS shares down 70% monday and hey presto $10k lost in every £100k you want to exchange!
It will be nice to get to Oz, only deal in $'s and never look at exchange rates again!

Just looked at the yahoo link that bcworld supplied which charts the history of the exchange rate over the last 12 months. Thanks for that.
It was 2.2 dollars to the pound or less throughout 08 until about October when of course it leapt up to 2.6 or slightly higher.
So, what happened in the UK/Oz economy around that time that made it leap so high suddenly?
If we can get an answer for that, we may be able to recognise whenever this significant event that happened in October 08 (if there was one) happens again, and then the exchange rate will leap again and we can all exchange our pounds for dollars then?
If my theory sound, or complete rubbish?!! I just reckon something must have caused the massive spike in Oct 08, so heres to it happening again!
Have set up my transfer account with Hifx, am moving to Oz in March so am just waiting & watching constantly for the best rate to fix as a forward rate with Hifx. Help!

That is happening again(to a much lesser extent) even this week as the markets are jittery again.....however the pound is also being sold off due to the problems with UK banks.

Unless your talking about at least 25 to 35 pct movement in the currency then you guys could be focusing on the wrong issue.
The job situation is now not very clever, or perhaps you've got rock solid employment lined up.

You're right, Ozzie eagle, I've seen all the other threads about the job situation in Oz so am certainly not going to Oz with our head in the sand.
However I've been made redundant here in the UK so don;t have a job here either. We luckily have our house in the UK rented out and our mortgage is covered, and we can stay with my brother in Australia until we get jobs there.
I'm hoping the situation in Oz is the same as the UK - you can still get a job if you're prepared to stack shelves, clean, do bar work etc.. and be paid badly. In the UK if you're prepared to do anything I believe you can still get a job. In Oz we are debt free and prepared for bad wages and ready to do anything.
A good exchange rate would help us have enough savings to live off, though. Anyone got a crystal ball?!

As soon as things pick up, then prices will go up again thus negating any benefit from exchange rate fluctuations.
What you lose on one hand you gain on another.
The biggest factor has to be work though, beyond any exchange rate issue. Unless your bringing in a large amount like 600,000 Aud or more and can afford to burn 120,000 Aud over two years waiting for things to pick up.
I'm guessing it would cost most people with families at least 60,000 Aud per annum to live, especially starting in a new country.

Thanks Ozzieeagle - I can well believe it costs $60K (aud) per annum to live if not more - we have this in savings so can use it if we need to but would really not burn all our savings.
Yesterday was a bad day for the pound and still only 2.12 dollars to the pound this morning (UK time)
Any chance the wave of optimism in America re; Obama's inauguration as president will make the pound stronger? Or is that too long a shot?!!

One day can make, and has made, so much difference over last 4 months or so and that can work in both directions!
I've been researching leaving money here just in case and waiting to send it but seen horror stories about being charged capital gains tax on the forex rate difference from when get to Oz and when money follows!!!
Further looked into this and discovered that if you have a bank account in UK set up before 2003 (that's when new forex rules were made regarding this) then it is not an issue!?
Anybody any experienced of doing this and being taxed???
