Default Freeview OZ & UK..................Yabadabadooooooooo!

Jesus,

Been back seven weeks, i tell yeh, don't do it, stick with OZ!!!!!!! I love England, my home country, people back here moaning about immigrants, they don't bother me one bit, i like movers and shakers, got bulls to move country, continent, i love the muilticulture of the UK, but the UK just don't tick all the boxes, nor does OZ, but OZ ticks more, so, no brainer really...will be back!!!!!!

Havin a nightmare with freeview back here, Jesus, i have built up a collection of new boxes, i am a collector, like Hannibal the Canibal, a collector!!!!!

Tell me will all these boxes work in OZ, anyone got any technical nounce on Freeview in OZ compared to the UK?

Have no technical knowledge but the two (different) boxes we brought with us don't work here in Perth.

Freeview in OZ only means that it is free to view

Often the decoders will work in Oz, although you may have to select another country (Austria is often the one, if its EU specific).

However they generally don't get HD channels, which is a bit annoying. HD decoders out here aren't expensive (its MPEG2, not MPEG4).

PS3 & PlayTV do work, with a software update. In the UK the PlayTV box is £29, in Oz its $159 - so if you have a PS3, get a PlayTV before you leave.

Oh, and Australian TV is poor. The only things worth watching are from the UK, and months out of date.

Hard to defend Aus telly but the US output is first rate. American TV is punching out some fantastic stuff and has for a few years now.

Oz digital TV channels have a different frequency separation to the UK. Depending on how they are designed some boxes will work no problem, some will work with a change of country if available in software, some will require a manual tune, some wont work.... also Australia has uses VHF + UHF for broadcast UK only uses UHF but has an overlapping but slightly different channel range .. so some might not receive all channels in all areas....

Freeview HD in the UK is quite different to HD in Australia but that'll just complicate things further...

So bit of pot luck..

In Oz digital freeview in teh main is transmitted on VHF, where as in UK it is on UHF frequencies. Most UK freeview boxes cannot tune to the VHF range and so don't work.

Quite often the cheaper boxes have simpler tuning functions and simply scan the whole range of channels. As said earlier the separation of the channels is different over here in Oz. I did a lot of searching after bringing our DVD/HDD/Freeview box over.

Both countries channels start at the same frequency, so you can usually get 1 channel (SBS or something like that I think it was). I did ask a Panasonic service centre whether they'd be able to update the firmware in our box, but to be honest I don't think the woman I spoke to knew what I was talking about!

Best to ask these sort of questions on here..... I'm sure you can change/flash most of these boxes.
