Free Trade Deal Struck with US

PM's call with Bush sealed deal
From AAP
February 09, 2004
THE trade agreement with the US was only finalised after Prime Minister John Howard spoke directly to US President George W. Bush, US Trade Representative Robert Zoellick said today.
Until then, the deal was stuck on the insurmountable problem of achieving greater access for Australian sugar to the US market.
The deal apparently came perilously close to failure, with Australia firm on its demands for free access for sugar and the US equally firm in keeping its sugar markets closed.

Anderson will not be a happy chappy. Is it coincidence the deal was struck after the QLD election?

There is also some historic litter with regards to the way the poms were building bombers in WW2. I think it was the Halifax. The yanks could not believe it...different philosophies to achieving common goals...
Nothing changes....

Concerns over trade deal's effect on PBS
February 9, 2004 - 12:14PM
The Australia-US trade pact had avoided the worst-case scenario for the nation's subsidised drug scheme but could still have damaging consequences for patients, the Australian Consumers' Association (ACA) said.
ACA senior health policy officer Martyn Goddard said the wording of the free trade agreement (FTA) meant patients should still have concerns about what it meant for the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS).
"The worst outcomes have been avoided but the fine print has worrying implications," Mr Goddard said.
The Australian government says the free trade agreement (FTA) will make the PBS listing process more transparent and timely.
The cost of PBS drugs, which are heavily subsidised by the federal government, will not rise.

"I came to the conclusion that it would have been against the national interest to give up a deal that is going to be of enormous benefit to the rest of the economy because we couldn't get something on sugar," he [PM] told the Nine Network.
Alan Oxley, director of lobby group Australian Business for a Free Trade Agreement with the United States, said the deal would add billions to trade between Australia and the United States and that sugar was a small sacrifice to make.
Australia-U.S. free trade deal draws mixed response
Just what the Yanks knew they could get.
Pah; a few $G/yr, a small price to pay to highlight hypocrisy. The agricultural world had its eyes on us - we let them down.

Hey guys, I think we really need to complain to the moderators about these non British people using this site. They are responsible for a lot of arguments that seem to be going on lately.
Why they don't get their own Expat site I don't know and leave this one to the British.
