Re: Franchise buy-in
Depends on the franchise - costs range enormously. My brother-in-law bought into a tile shop franchise which had up-front costs of $100k, the franchise I'm considering is usually $30k up-front.

Anyway, what I can say if you look in the NZ yellow pages there are heaps of attorneys specialising in franchise disputes so that for me is a flag going up. I agree with the start-up thing.
I always offer advice in trying to secure a territorial or exclusive agency agreement for a decent product and develop the markets for those and at least you are developing your own asset. If you are currently in employment you can do your search to find the right product agency thing and maybe even start up and phase in / out approach thus minimising your risk.
Maybe even look into a buy-in to a business where you will work for the business.
It has got to be win / win otherwise you will start to resent your situation.
My 5 cents for what it’s worth.
Cheers & good luck.

The problem is not so bad if the fee is fixed... But I don't imagine many are... And then the harder you work and the better you do, the more you pay... Couldn't put up with it... And then I guess previously having started from scratch a business that employed 49 people and turned over $20m I'd always struggle with someone else climibing on my back...

I'd be happy with a 15% fee if it left me with a 30% net pre tax.
Conversely I wouldn't be happy with a 15% fee which left me with 5%.
