Default Flying via Florida US, is this possible?

Hi all,

Have enjoyed a couple of family hols over the years in Florida.

Our dream move would be to pack in work, fly to Florida have a couple of weeks or so there playing with Mickey and then fly on to Adelaide.

Has anyone else done this? How did you go about booking flights? Was it more expensive.

Many thanks

Bill

Hi,
We did this on our validation trip but on the return trip. Went to Brisbane, Los Angeles and then on to Florida. I thought it was quite reasonable considering. Only problem was we were away for a month and the kids were so tired by the time we got to Florida I had difficulty getting them out of bed before lunch time. May have been better doing it the other way around.
Tracey.

You can certainly fly via LAX (Los Angeles).

We thought about it having never been to the States and having done a stop over in Singapore last year but it seems to be quite a bit more expensive.

UK - Singapore - Oz seems cheapest, esp. with Singapore Air (for obvious reasons).

You can apparently fly via Hawaii, Japan, Hong Kong, LA, Fiji, Maldives tc. etc.

Problem is cost but then again the way I look at it is you ain't gonna get to go there again and have no bills/mortgage at home to worry about so why not?

Cadman

BTW - apparently LAX is a dump and it takes 5 hours to get through customs/immigration

Hi Bill

We are planning on going via Florida / LA then onto Brissie.
Debs (My extremely better half) went to Manchester to enquire and get some prices.

She went to Trailfinders first , but found them very unprofessional and unhelpful.
Across the road is an American Express office and in the window theres loads of info on travelling to Oz.
The girl was extremely helpful, this is what she came up with:

Fly from Manchester to Heathrow. (28th August)
Fly from Heathrow to Florida.
10 Days car hire in Florida.(7th Sept)
Fly from Florida to LA, then onto Brissie.

Total price for 2 adults & 1 child (4 yrs) = £2346.00
This price includes all airport taxes and full car insurance. The only thing to add to this price would be the cost of accomodation in Florida.

Extremely good price we think.
Hope this helps.

That seems extremely reasonable.

I have noticed the higher up the country you fly the cheaper it is, any ideas why?

We went to Orlando last year and paid 1800 just for fly drive so can't go wrong with American Express if ask me.

Have fun! If never been before you'll love it. My eldest was 4 first time she went and its a lovely age to meet your disney friends.

Hi Bill,

We came this way 18 months ago. We flew Heathrow to New York to Chicago to Orlando to Los Angeles to Sydney with United Airlines. The price included 3 free stopovers and we paid for one extra internal flight. For 2 adults and 1 child (aged 11) the airfare only cost us GBP1700 in total. We took a month to get here but had the most brilliant time. We figured when else would hubby have a months holiday in one go while daughter was still interested in coming with us so we just had our 'holiday of a lifetime'. I would recommend it to anyone. Apart from being "randomly selected" for extra security checks on every flight we had no problems clearing any immigration and LAX was boring but not a nightmare. The random selection apparently was because we had one way tickets and they wanted to know why we weren't coming back!

My advice is go do it and have a blast.

Worth it if you are planning on stopping in Florida for a bit, You will probably have to stop in LAX or SFO aswell, LAX is a S+++ hole of an airport and unless you have a major yearning to go to LA I would avoid at all costs. I cant speak to SFO as I have never been there.

As Jeremy always says make sure you have the correct passports to Enter the States. They must be machine readable and all children must hold there own passport.

Hi BB1

We also went via the US but not Florida.
We flew London - San Fran - Vegas - LA - Brisbane.
The both of us would recommend this to anyone lots to see and do (fishermans wharf, alcatraz, golden gate bridge in San Fran and I think most people need to try Vegas once in their life) plus the bonus of 64kg each in luggage allowance. Why try to haggle of 40kg when you can have 64kg. The cost was not to bad at all we were charged 550 pounds one way with a one way through Asia being approx 450 pounds.

And LA was not as bad as everyone keeps saying took no longer to get through than any other airport I have been to in the world.

You may just have arrived at a good time. LA waiting times for immigration are, to say the least, 'variable'. Especially if you are a non-US citizen.

Yep - LAX is a hell hole. For what it's worth our wait for immigration wasn't too bad. Waited in line for 2 hours. The customs officials were muppets though - but that's American's for you

hi there.
4500 times other half here,i enquired about this supposed increased baggage allowance but because we are stopping to make a holiday she said we were only allowed 20kg,she advised speaking to British airways and plead with them.airlines used for this trip would be BA,united airlines then quantas.

Depends when you go through there. We arrived at 9am on a sunday & were through in 20mins. San Fransisco is a better bet overall.
